Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Like Paul Revere, just arrived, breathlessly, from
Boston. Had a wonderful time studying the Am. Rev. and thanks to all for the good ideas. I think we followed each and every suggestion!!! Besides the Am.Rev sites, we also did some literary jaunts, including the wonderful Louisa May Alcott house that someone mentioned---well worth the effort---and the Henry Wadsworth Longfellow home, also very "worthy", as well as others. It was a great trip.

As we visited place after place, I scrutinized the stores for new resources, or ones I hadn't seen. One series of books I found that looked interesting were books by Anne Rinaldi, anyone out there read her books? Any insight? She has novels on the Boston Massacre, on Paul Revere, and Patrick Henry, among others. Looked interesting.

Another book I found (tho it's been around a while, I've just never gotten up close and personal with it) is the Brown Paper School USKids History. The one I bought was the "Book of the American Revolution" and Ivery much like it. It is billed as a way to "discover your history thru stories, games and activities". It is engagingly written, and even, and has good activities. Much better than that other hands-on history series, whose title I currently misremember. I actually bought it, hated it, abandoned it in the hotel... Too heavy to tote around and not worth the effort! Anyway, back to Brown Paper School, high marks.

Gotta run. Thanks again to all for the great suggestions.

Oh--I just picked up two copies of the Brown Paper School USKids "Book of the American Revolution" hoping my daughters would use it for independent work next year. Glad to see my money was well spent!

Welcome home from your vacation!

Here's another thumbs-up for the Brown Paper series. We love them!!!

Ann Rinaldi's books are very good...very accurate and compelling. However, I'd recommend them for older readers. This is due to the fact that she doesn't sugar-coat things like slaveowners having children with their enslaved female servants. She doesn't provide graphic detail, either, but in some of her books (esp. Civil War ones) she does bring up these grown-up concepts.

Having said that, I've read nearly every book she's written and enjoyed them all. An older girl who liked history would eat them up. And, most titles are readily available in libraries.

Glad to get the thumbs-up on Brown Paper series and Rinaldi books (since I invested in both!). And thanks for the heads-up on the incipient mature themes in some of the Rinaldi books. Good to know in advance. As for the Brown Paper series, I read the Am. Rev book from cover to cover and really liked it. I think it will be easy to incorporate into our history studies, and will probably be good for independent work for your girls, too, Alice. For my older students, I also plan to use the American Revolution Jackdaw. Also, not to forget the musical, "1776". I watched it the other night with the kids and REALLY enjoyed it, got so much more out of it now!

As for "Sleds on Boston Commons", I bought that at the Harvard Coop! Thanks for the rec.

Kelly,

Sounds like such a fabulous trip. I'm going to throw in an author Eva K. Betz...she wrote several books relating to American Revolutionary times, very living books. Unfortunately she's out of print. I can't put my hands on my volumes, but searching "Eva Betz" on Bookfinder will give you all sorts of titles. Young Eagles is about some NJ teenagers during the onset of the Revolutionary War. Desperate Drums, Freedom Drums and Victory Drums are also in the series.

Also forgot, she has a biography on Bishop Carroll: Priest, Patriot and Leader by Eva K. Betz.

It's a love of mine, too!! Not only are the books good, but the thrill of the hunt is included in the reading!
