Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Our baby's arrival is quickly approaching!! Dh and I have already decided against the antibiotic eye drops for our newborn but we are undecided about the Vit K injection. Can you tell me why or why not you chose for your baby to have the injection. Any insight would be great! Thanks!

I have been researching this for a few weeks now. We are choosing not to give the shot for this reason: The downside of this [shot]... is a possibly 80% increased risk of developing childhood leukemia.

However, the nursing mother can take vitamin K supplements daily or twice weekly for 10 weeks right after birth. Supplementation of the pregnant mother does not alter fetal levels but supplementation of the nursing mother does increase breastmilk and infant levels.

I hope this helps.

We've had all ours done and will with the next one, too.

Dh is a doctor and has seen some scary literature about intracranial bleeding as a result of vit K deficiency. We've looked in to the research and on our reading of it, the link to leukaemia is not proven but the risk of bleeding without vit K is proven.

Having said that I'm not saying that we've made the 'right' decision and others haven't. We all have to weigh up these incredibly difficult decisions don't we...

We did not do it with the last three. I would have chosen to do it if the birth were tramatic, included forceps delivery or if the newborn would be in need of any immediate surgeries, somethings that present a risk of bleeding. Also if we had chosen to circumcise I would have been more likely as well but since we did not do that there was no increased need in order to stop bleeding. Hemorrhagic disease is rare. If there are signs and symptoms of hemorrhagic disease which Vit K can be given.

The last time I had a hospital birth (1991) there was only the option of the injection. It is now also an option to give an oral dose. That would be my prefered method if I were to choose to do it even though I've seen some say it is not as effective.

Like Ruth said - mom can boost milk levels with supplements. And the components of breastmilk help the baby's gut colonize good bacteria that aid in the production of its own Vitamin K.
