Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My 7yo dd seems to need less and less sleep. As I write, it's nearly 11 pm and she's still awake in bed, reading.

She gets plenty of fresh air and exercise and eats well. AFAIK she doesn't have any big worries. We have a nice bedtime routine with bath, stories, prayers and cuddles.

My younger two children go to bed at 8.30ish but we let our eldest read downstairs until 9.30pm or so. She goes to bed then, but still doesn't go to sleep until 10.30pm. Incidentally, this is a privilege that does get withdrawn from time to time and whether she reads downstairs or not, she doesn't fall asleep until 10.30 pm at the earliest.

She wakes up at 8.30 am, so she does get about 10 hours of sleep a night.

Is this normal and if not, what can I do? If I don't let her read in bed, it's torture for her as she just lies there for two hours -- an eternity for her.

very normal and if you want her asleep earlier.. you'd probably need to get her up earlier.

But then.. I'm sorta weird in that my kids don't need that much sleep either.. my 3 year old only gets about 11 hours of sleep... regardless of when it is.. if he gets a nap.. you can just subtract that from the total for how long he'll sleep that night. The older kids need less than that.

Elizabeth, your post brings back memories of my dd at her age. My dd is now 15 and is decidedly a night owl, just like her dad. I'm a morning person so this "child up late at night" thing really bothered me at first. It was my dh who encouraged me to keep an eye on my dd and her behavior during the day (was she cooperative, happy, pleasant) instead of on the clock. As the children have grown, we've adapted sleep times according to sleep style as well as famiy need...an imprecise art form and juggling act for sure.

Love,
