Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I just wondered if any of your children are like this...

My 8 yo dd seems to forget almost all her math every time we take a break. Sometimes it's been to the point where I think she's forgotten everything except knowing how to count and what adding and subtracting mean.

Before our last break, she was doing adding and subtracting with regrouping and learning how to multiply. She knew her addition and subtraction facts. She could do place value to thousands. She still had problems combining ten with ones to make teens and adding three numbers was laborious. But now, after our (fairly short) break, she's forgotten how to regroup, she no longer seems to know her addition and subtraction facts, and place value is iffy. Forget tens and teens.

So basically every time this happens we start over. We eventually get past the point at which we stopped the last time, but it's still sort of bewildering to me when I ask her to do a problem I'm pretty sure she knows how to do and she acts like she's never seen it before. I know that most kids need some review, but it seems like she needs a lot more than most? Or maybe I'm not aware of the kind of review most kids need?

Anyone btdt and have any tips?

One way around this is doing maths daily - in real life - for example, thinking out loud, maths games in the car, playing cards and board games and so on while on vacation. Just look for opportunities to incorporate a little mahts each day.

At Kumon, we talk about doing 5 or 10 minutes of Maths a day even over vacation - when I was teaching in schools it was very common for young stduents to have forgotten their maths after a break. So, the little bit of Maths helps.

Anyway, your dd is normal - this forgetting happens often!

I second Leonie's advice.

I think that a lot of it has to do with whether or not the child is "math-oriented." My second son understands math without much explanation. He has tended to forget less when we break. My older son struggles with math concepts, and tends to lose more when we break.

I think that part of it is a lack of depth of understanding. My 13yo would never forget place value, multiplication, addition/subtraction of fractions. But he's had a lot of practice and really understands those things deeply now. A year or two ago, knowledge of fractions went out the window every time we had a break. So it will stick with time and practice. Daily review is excellent.
