We may be moving to Las Vegas in a very short time. Does anyone live there? Does anyone know of nice areas, churches, etc?
Any help, etc, would be very great.

yes, it is quite a change, and I can not say I am completely thrilled about it. Well, about parts of it, I am, and otehr parts....not so much. I am comfy here .
Does no one from the boards live in the area? No one at all?
Is there a hysterical sobbing emoticon? Or how about one having a panic attack?
I feel like everything is kind of surreal right now....

I. AM. SO. JEALOUS!!!!!!
We left Vegas two years ago. It was absolutely the best place friends, homeschooling, activities, and SUN. Yes, I need sun to give my mood a lift. OK, you're in AZ...you know heat. lol
You won't have a problem finding a church because, from what I read a few years back, Vegas has more churches per capita than any other city in the U.S.
We lived in the N/NW part of town. Far from the strip, but lots to do. The homeschooling community is very, very welcoming. Oh, how I miss them.
You don't need to ever go to the strip. Vegas is so much more than that one loooong strip of road. There are a lot of freebies in those casinos for "field trips"...Siegfried & Roy's white tigers & lion, dolphins, aquariums, ......of course it's a whole different place when the sun goes down. The parks are gorgeous and themed....a dinosaur park....everything built like you're at Jurassic park, the sand box has dino skeletons in it...the kids dig deep enough....butterfly park...everything themed around a garden.....almost all parks have sprinklers for the kids to run through.
Oh, how we miss it. Most people think of gambling...it's there, shopping at Albertsons there will be slot machines...taking your kids bowling it's usually in a casino (separate entrance), but it's there.
We miss going to the drive in there....homeschoolers can make a trip out of anything...and we'd take up ROWS there. Natural History Museum, Children's Museum....well, the zoo has much much to be desired (Steve Irwin was supposed to build a new zoo there before his death, but.....) there is a decent petting zoo up in Red Rock though.
Here is the Catholic group....it covers all of NV, but the LV homeschoolers are on it.
Catholic Homeschoolers of NV
I started a group of very close friends who lived basically within five miles of each other (the homeschooling community is BIG there...school are very very bad).....the group has expanded, but you'll find it easily if you live in the N/NW part of town -- I'd be glad to give you contact info if you need it.
This got long....sorry. I'd love to go back, but DH's job is here. I could go on & on about living and homeschooling in Vegas. (Can you tell we LOVED it?!)
When you know you're heading that way, please let me know which part of Vegas. I'll ask my friends about groups in other parts of the city. We still talk every other week! The absolute best part is they are so welcoming!!!!

My inlaws are in Vegas, so we go often. Can't tell you much about the homeschooling community, but we have "shopped around" for parishes there, and the one we LOVE is "Our Lady of Las Vegas." Reverent masses (even heard a homily against contraception there!), great priests, a very diverse community of anglos, asians, blacks, etc... so it just feels more Catholic. And the architecture and music were sublime.
It's true, you can avoid "the Strip" but the taxis with the soft core porn pictures drive EVERYWHERE!

We attended Our Lady. At the time there was a Mass every two hours, from 6am until 6-7 pm on Sundays...packed...standing room.

My DH worked w/ law enforcement, and at the time, they were very vocal where not to live because of crime and other negatives. I think depending on where you live (closer to the strip) there will be much more taxis than in other places. Tourist hot spots or close to the places the locals hang out....
The closer to those places the more stuff you don't want to be around. (Large transient community.....the tent cities for the homeless...ect.)
I can't speak (type) highly enough about the North and Northwest parts of town.
I better get my kiddoes outside. If I don't stop reminiscing about our time there, I'll start bugging DH again about going back. We can't do that ...we just bought a house here.
