i am trying to have an all homemade christmas this year. i can quilt and sew very simple things and i am a beginning knitter. my brother is 28, single, likes basketball and his dogs. any ideas?? he live in MN, so a scarf and/or hat would be appropriate, but he is kind of a fashion plate and i dont know if he would go for the homespun look. he loves his nephews, so i thought of a "worlds best uncle" shirt or something. help!!!!

My mom still wears a t-shirt my kids made when Joe and Cate were little (so it's more than 12 years old!) -- he could wear it as a night shirt or run-the-house grunge shirt if it's not cool enough! Lots of fabric paint, hand-prints in the shape of hearts (or you can do a foot for head and hands for antlers and make reindeer shirt).
A scarf knit in the colors of his favorite team would be cool -- if you CO lengthwise -- so about 6 ft worth of sts and knit every row, alternating colors occasionally, it gives a unique scarf as the stripes are lengthwise -- very cool and groovy!

The dog sweater idea is brilliant...every store in MD seems to be selling dog sweaters, dog Halloween costumes, etc. Plus, they're (hopefully) smaller than people sweaters, so could be faster to make.

Does he put up a Christmas tree?
I have never gone wrong with crochet snowflakes to hang on the tree. They are relatively easy if you know how to crochet, and even if you don't, there are some that are pretty simple you can do as a beginner. 12-15 unique ones can be done up pretty quickly.

This year my kids are making the aunts/ uncles/ grandparents/ cousins those fleece throws (lap blankets) that don't require sewing- you simply cut two pieces of polar or solar fleece the same size, cut a fringe all the way around, and tie the two pieces together by knotting the fringe. Does that make sense??

I love those tied blankets Lori... and they have fleece with basketball logos and such even.

In Amy Karol's new Bend the Rules Sewing book, there are directions for a simple dog collar. I haven't tried it as I don't have any dogs, but her other projects have been very do-able so far. The book is available from Amazon and if you search for Bend the Rules Sewing group on Flickr you can look (search) for pics of the collar; I think there are a couple that have come thru.

thanks for all your ideas ladies, i think i will go with a scarf. i have all the stuff for it and even if it doesnt meet his tommy hilfiger fashion standards, maybe he will still wear it cause his one and only sister made it for him.
but i am tucking those other ideas away for next time.
