Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

With Jenn's recent observation of Drummer Hoff (and since we are at war and our dc are very much aware of the fight against terrorism), I thought it might be helpful to suggest how we handle these books for little ones and which *war* books have we come across that rises above the ugliness of war.

The books needn't be on any one certain war. Any war will do.

A favorite around here is: We Played Marbles by Tres Seymour/ Dan Andreasen

We just read Lisette's Angel and found it a good read - very touching. It is set in France during WW II and the story ends with the Victory at Normandy (without any details of the death and suffering). An American paratrooper lands in the little girl's field and she believes him to be an angel (and his parachute a star from which he falls). It touches on the hardships of war under the occupation and the human experience. There is ample opportunity to discuss how people's lives are affected by wars and ways in which they act or cannot act in that time.

Because we have been reading about Karol Wojtyla's early life during Nazi occupation of Poland and just watched the miniseries movie, the younger ones are aware of WWII. So this story had familiar elements (the German soldiers, the swastika, etc.).

Another picture book we read on WWII was Cats in Krasinski Square. Definitely a somber tale which talks about the ghettos but also one of hope and the daring exploits of those who worked to help the Jews in Poland. Definitely leads to discussion.

One of my all time favorite books is Number the Stars, about WWII. This touching story about the Danish resistance is told from the point of view of a ten-year-old girl whose family helps smuggle their close friends (Jewish) across to Sweden. This book is very historically accurate, but isn't violent (except for one aspect...the narrator's older sister died in a car accident that turns out to be a deliberate Nazi attack, and later her fiancé is executed...but there's no graphic detail).

I think this book would be OK for children perhaps 8 years old and up. It's not a picture book.

We have a picture book about a dad on a Navy deployment, told from his child's point of view, but the title escapes me. I'll have to dig it up and post later. (!)
