i am hoping to get a BIG bag of bird seed (sunflower seeds) to get us ready for the winter. before i have just bought it as we need it, and i would like to keep a more consistent supply for our feathered friends. i was was wondering if i should store it outside or inside and in what kind of container. outside i am afraid it would get wet and mildewed. inside, i am afraid it may attract mice (we have had them before)   
any suggestions?

We store ours inside in a large, sturdy Rubbermaid/Sterilite containter. In our old house it was kept in the garage; in this new one it is in the basement which has a walkout to the backyard. So far, no critters.

I would shy away from keeping it outside since squirrels are REALLY good at gnawing away at things until they get to the seed and raccoons are pretty adept. :-)

BTW, my husband says you can get big bags of Sunflower seed at places like Home Depot for pretty cheap.

Monica, we buy a 40 lb. bag of seed and store it in our hall closet. (It needs replacing about once a month!) We haven't had any trouble with mice, but I've thought about getting something like this as it would be easier than trucking the pitchers of seed in and out.

Might be a good idea to keep it in a big plastic container of some sort. If it has a good seal you could keep it outside, I'm thinking the big rubbermaid one. If you have an extra cupboard you could put it in the plastic container than store it there.   

If you live in a wooded area be careful of squirrels. At our old house we went out one day and left the sliding glass door that led to our 2nd floor deck open, a bag of birdseed right inside. We had a little squirrel in our house, he chewed through the screen, of course my dh was not home. I am sure that little squirrel is going through therapy now due to all the screaming he endured.    

After that we found somewhere else to keep the bird seed.

My mom found an old metal garbage can at an estate sale for me to keep my birdseed. She has found them to be the best at keeping squirrels out since it is difficult to chew through metal...but I guess not impossible if it is screening. Too funny, Mary Chris.

An ash can is made of metal.........so it could work, too. I keep ashes in mine

I just keep my bird seed in the garage in a cardboard box.......no mice with ten cats living in the vicinity
