Hi Everyone,
My son, age 14-1/2, is beginning treatment for anxiety, specifically Obsessive/Compulsive Disorder. He is feeling very down right now. He thinks everyone will think he is weird or crazy because he suffers from an anxiety related disorder. Please pray that the Lord would encourage him with a jump start - he could really use a boost to get him going and feeling like he can beat this.
Thank you all so much and God bless!
Tea

Dear Tea,
OCD and anxiety disorders are so hard..I know! I'm so sorry he's going through this, and what you're having to deal with too. I guess the good news is that many people have anxiety and more than we know have some symptoms of OCD, and it seems to be a very treatable condition.
I'll send prayers, but if I might also recommend a book that really helped our family: it's called Brain Lock by Jeffrey M. Schwartz. I'll try to link it from Amazon, but if not just Google the title.
http://www.amazon.com/Brain-Lock-Yourself-Obsessive-Compulsi ve-Behavior/dp/0060987111
Anyway, you should read it first, but it really does a good job of explaining what's happening in the brain during OCD episodes, and a way to talk yourself out of them, which gives the person a real sense of control over themselves again..that's the scariest thing about anxiety and OCD is feeling like you're losing control of your thoughts. Sometimes good cognative therapy can really help reduce the need for meds.
As far as those go, really be vocal with the Dr. if your son or you think his med (if he's on one) isn't right, and go with the lowest dose possible (no I'm not qualified to give medical advice, I know!) I also believe in some sort of short term anxiety reliever should be taken (again in low doses) while any antidepressant is being adjusted to. I did well with Klonipin (spelling?)as needed for symptoms and Zoloft for the long term...hey, Mike Wallace took Zoloft! Again, I'm NOT a doctor.
Best of luck, and tell him not to be ashamed or embarrassed, but I would also recommend that he keep this a somewhat private issue as he works through it. No sense in adding worry about what others are thinking to his already heavy load. Once he's though it, he can share his story with others who are suffering. Have great hope, he CAN overcome this!

Please tell your son that I worked for 4 years for a very successful manager of a bus parts division of a multinational company...prior to that he had been a successful police officer (resigned for family reasons, absolutely nothing to do with OCD). He earned a good salary, had a lovely wife and nice children, and they all worked together to handle the few minor issues his OCD meds couldn't cancel out. He was a happy, well-off, successful person while I was working for him. (I'm sure he still is; somehow I'd have heard.)
As a teen, one always worries about being different. It does take time to realize that adults come in all shapes and sizes and they are mature enough to get along, for the most part.
Praying for all of you...

Praying for your son and for your mother's heart. May you both have peace. I have been through some intense times with my dd and her struggle with OCD when she was younger. She is well, now. But I remember the heartache so well.
God Bless.
