Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My 15 yo will be doing European history from the Middle Ages on and I was wondering if anyone had any resources they would recommend for this study. We plan to use Christ the King, Lord of History as a spine. He's hoping to be able to make this AP Euro History and take the AP test. Anyone had any experience with this?

I don't know the requirements for the AP tests but, off the top of my head, these are a couple of books we have liked.

The Daughter of Time by Josephine Tey - about Richard III. A fictional account of an historical investigation into Richard III - was he as good or bad as history says? Many historians now debate this issue.

Shakespeare's play Richard III would be good to go along with this.

We have read some of the volumes from Winston Churchill's History of the English Speaking People. Biased against Catholicism in parts but interesting and informative reads.

Napoleon's The Art of War ( writings of Napoleon Bonaparte on war, propaganda, the role of the media) is also good for first hand information.

I am sure there are many others but I am drawing a blank right now!

There is also this
website. with historical movies in chronological order.

Leonie and Deborah, great suggestions. We did the "combination platter" of "Daughter of Time" and then Shakespeare's "Richard III" and it was fun. I also really like "Catholic History thru Biography"--I think Kolbe recommends this, too. Liz, you might also check out "The Well Trained Mind" for further suggestions for History. It's pretty thorough (tho slanted toward Protestant history). Also, if you are planning to tackle the AP test, I think you can get an outline of suggestions for what you should cover. I believe you can just google AP History and see what comes up. I need to do this, too, with my 15 year old history student.

Liz:

I don't know if you've seen this, but the College Board site has all their AP stuff online -- here's the link for the European History test -- tells you all the themes etc. You can download all the info too.

NOTE: College Board specifically mentions that they welcome homeschooled kids taking the tests and how to obtain all the info. This site also does the CLEP if your students want to opt out of some required stuff for college.....

My dd wants to take the French and German tests, and when we downloaded the info, there was a list of suggested books to read to prep.

Hope this helps....
