I need help from all you jean and skirt wearing fashionistas....I do not understand the different cut of jeans. What are the right jeans for an almost 40 still carrying the baby weight mom. Right now I just make sure I'm wearing a shirt or sweater that covers that area . Can someone please explain all these styles relaxed fit, boot cut, etc..... And who should wear what. I know the skirts I like if I could just figure out jeans.

No fashionista here! I'm so glad there's not a camera hooked to my computer!!
But... I do think relaxed fit is what I have... I think it means bigger and looser in the Mommy weight areas. Relaxed fit WITH boot cut is nice too because for tall me that usually means that I have a chance of my jeans going past my ankle! I've found that a couple of times, but often boot cut has meant lower rider...
It's the one thing that I haven't seemed to find the secret to buying online. I have to go in and try them on. Khakis I've got down, jeans seem not to work the same way.

low-rider these are definitely the bane of any "mommy-weight" ladies!
I can't wait till fashions come back around to the pants that come up over the nether regions and actually sit on the waist! That's why I like LLBean's -- you can order in the privacy of your home (after privately measuring yourself of course ) and they have all the different cuts.
I prefer straight/full leg -- boot cut is a slight flare that reminds me too much of my teen years in SF!

Ugh jeans that sit at the waist are the bane of my existence. Jeans at the waist either squeeze the life out of me or are waaaaay too big in the hips. I like Eddie Bauer's Classic fit jeans, although the jeans I have are several years old and the styles may have changed since I bought. They aren't all the way up at the waist and they aren't way too low. I guess that makes them just right. I'm tall so a slight boot cut isn't too much.

Another problem is just when you find the right size/style/maker -- they don't make it anymore or WORSE, they come from different off-shore factories and aren't cut the same!!!!!
But, again, LLBean has been good to me ... and I do go to the thrift shops and check there -- since I don't wear jeans too often, I need that "lived in" look !

Mary Chris,
Check out Kohls. They usually have a good variety of jeans. I have had luck there. I like their brand over the name brands. Less expensive and good quality. I like relaxed fit, with a little bit of stretch in them.
The best pair of jeans I ever bought I found at Potomac Mills. They were Geoffrey Beane. When I went back to find more, I couldn't find the same style.

Mary Chris, I love that you have all these wonderful topics this week! Are you "padding" your post count?? I am actually getting in gear for jeans this season, as I only have 1 pair that fits me! I can't figure out khakis for the life of me, so jeans are my staple.
If you take the bottom of the jean, and fold it up to the knee (while it's on a hanger, of course) and the base is wider than the knee, then it is a boot cut jean. That means it kind of comes in at the knee, and then goes out just a little. I'm sure you know what flare jeans look like - balloon-y on the bottom. Straight leg would be the same size from the knee down. Stay away from anything that is SMALLER at the bottom than the knee! That is the tapered leg. Relaxed cut would be a little more "roomy" in the hips and thighs. A jean with a little bit of stretch is not so stiff and is nice for comfort.
Have you ever watched the show "What Not to Wear" on TLC? That's where I get all my fashion tips. Most of the time, they say that a dark wash, straight leg is the best on most people. At the waist jeans are not usually the best, but "just below the waist" is a really good option. Fit the largest part of you (be it your hips, thighs, etc) and make friends with a tailor! (their words, not mine)
I hate to say it, but it is really important to just try on a bunch. Then you will have a better idea too. Ann Taylor has some nice cuts, and Lands End can give you just about anything, and the nice part is that you can return them to Sears!
Oh my! Sorry this has gone on so long. Good luck, Mary Chris! I will be thinking of you when I go shopping next.

Check this site out. It will choose the best jeans for you and will find them based on your price range and all sorts of things. It will ask a ton of questions...but it's fun...and probably right on. I didn't buy the pair they recommended at the time...but I might do it again actually. They gave me pairs from $250 from some fancy site to nice JCPenney types for $25! It's fun to do nonetheless!!!

I could have written this, save the tall part. My Eddie Bauer are like your Eddie Bauer, Patty. And they are several years old. They don't make them like that anymore. I know. I tried on every pair of jeans in the store. Mine are petites so they aren't too long. Waistbands are just a total pain after having eight babies. That's a big part of why I tend towards my skirts with elastic backs...
Oh, but the one good thing about modern jeans over my older jeans is S-T-R-E-T-C-H. Whoever first put Lycra in jeans is a jeanius!

That was fun Kacky!
I got 55 jeans to try! I ought to write some of those down for next time I am in the market for jeans.

I used to think like you until I bought a pair that seats at the waist from Dress Barn and I hate them! They feel just... well... too high

Kacky,
What a great site! It gave me some good options. I just wish I liked to shop. Shopping was fun when I was 20 and thin
Fuzzy,
These are serious questions I'm posting , it's not about the post count

That zafu thing is good. If nothing else, it gives you ideas of things to watch for when looking for jeans.
Most Lands End or Eddie Bauer catalogues give diagrams of the different cuts. Maybe that would be helpful.
All these crazy cuts and fits are one of the things that got me interested in dresses and skirts a few years ago. I just hated all the time trying on pants trying to find the ones that looked good.
For my pants now, I go to the thrift stores on half-off days and spend 30 minutes trying on pants/capris twice a year for something that looks halfway decent. Then buy them for $2 each. That way, I don't feel bad 3 months later when I can't wear them cuz I'm pregnant again .
Personally, when there is any sort of "extra" around the tummy area, I don't think the waistband should be under that. But, that just shows how "out of style" I am, cuz that ain't the way o' the world these days!

Cindy Mac posted about the made to order QVC jeans back in March. I have been wanting to order but don't want to spend so much on jeans before I lose more weight.
Has anyone else tried them?
Oh and they're made in Mexico.

I know, and I really wish I didn't know!
That's one of the reasons I liked my Eddie Bauers. The waist hit right at the fluffiest part of my tummy, not above and not below (ACK!).
I own two pairs of jeans in my current size and two pairs in one size smaller. That said, I have dresses and skirts I wear quite a lot in the summer, and I'm starting to feel drawn toward more feminine dressing in the winter too. I need to revisit some of last year's threads on skirts and boots and other warmth issues.

In the summer, I'm set. In the winter, not so much. I'm feeling the need to femininize (is that a word?) my winter wardrobe (like I posted above). Need to dig out that huge, huge thread again...

Reminds me of the conversation with my son that I posted on my blog several months ago:
While lying in bed...
SAMUEL: Mama, roll back the other way!
ME: But I'm more comfortable this way.
SAMUEL: But I need you to be my pillow!
ME: You have a pillow right there.
SAMUEL: But you're fluffier.

I completely agree with Elizabeth about the wonders of a bit of lycra in jeans. I used to love straight leg jeans and often bought them in a relaxed fit style.
Now I know that that style is not the best for me. I need a bit of a flare leg to offset my hips. And the relaxed fit ended up making me look heavier due to the extra fabric in the thighs. A bit more fitted upper leg is actually much more flattering, in my opinion. (Not tight, mind you, just more fitted. )
My most recent jean purchase was a pair of Levi denim capris with a bit of stretch. They were originally $40, but I got them on a final clearance for $2.49!!!

Oh, great topic! I just wore through the knees of my favorite jeans and need to get some new ones.
My favorites right now are Levis "signature" jeans. They have lycra, relaxed fit (a bit low-waisted, but I am short-waisted so they hit me right)and boot cut, which I like because, well..I wear boots a lot! They are inexpensive, come in several shades, and are readily available, which I like.
