and other iterations of this question......? I always feel like my answers could be more of a witness. What positive, life-affirming responses do you give to well-wishing curious people when they ask this sort of question in wonder at the size of your brood?
God bless,
Kathleen

Last week I spit out something I'd never said before and was quite proud of my little quip...."Not sure, God keeps us on a 'need to know basis.' "

I love it! Short, upbeat, and implies trust and faith. It's brilliant.

"only God knows the answer to that question"
I actually say that one a lot for various questions.

Why do you ask?
This one usually makes one pause and hopefully ponder their lack of discretion.

This question isn't only directed at mothers with large broods. I'm expecting only my second and everywhere I go I get this question. Every time it makes my heart sink. I don't have any witty answer, just a "We don't know yet."
Which is true...I don't know if I'll come out in one piece after this c-section!

I generally say, "We'll have as many as God gives us" or "We decided from the beginning to have one at a time....then God gave us twins. I don't think He's done laughing at us yet."
However, I'm finding that with 6 people have stopped asking. Either they assume we're done or they assume we aren't, but they don't seem to ask anymore, which sort of makes me sad.

I usually say " My husband wants 10 ". He's been saying that for years. As a matter of fact he said that to me just after we first met .
It used to bother me when people would say that. Really is it any of their business? But over the years as our family grew those questions have diminished.

My response is always, "Oh, I hope not!" This usually leaves people either speechless and pondering or they proceed with the attempt to describe me as if I must be the most saintly and patient person in the world - both so very untrue. If they try to paint me as a saint, then I say honestly that I am not patient by nature but God gives so many joys - the children are so very precious and life is so much richer because of them.

"Well, I'm not going to stop sleeping with him. He's just SOOOOOO sexy!!!"
THAT usually shuts them up.

LOL
You know nobody asks me this anymore! I think that something stops them from asking a woman with 7 children as close together as mine and an 8th on the way. To be honest the only comments we get are usually directed to dh. Otherwise I seem to get a lot of respect, as in "How do you do it?" People tell dh all of the time "Your wife works harder than you do!" I am not so sure about that.
Besides that anyone who knows us as a married couple realises that our marriage is closer and that we have been truly blessed by having children.

I've been known to point to the baby or my belly and say "Nah, we figure this is our middle child!" LOL!

Lisa, that's a good one. I'll have to remember that one (and also remember to tell DH that I am only being silly to drive these people bonkers...).

Colleen...that is the best comeback!!!!! I know I am going to get it even more now that Lily is here....and especially since she is the second one in a row who needs a lot of intervention medically from a genetic condition....it is a hard one to answer....but now thanks to Colleen, I have one!!!

As Jenn pointed out, those of us with only two get this a lot, too. I'll definitely keep some of these comebacks in mind. I most typically get, "Now you're done!" (I have one of each). One acquaintance, after hearing that we wanted another said, "You mean you're just going to have as many as possible?" It's so amazing that our culture equates three with "as many as possible."
For the record, I always reply, "Oh, no. We want LOTS more."

You know when it comes down to it, after the kidding subsides my dh gets serious and basically says to people, that they are our children and our responsibility. And that having a large family is our preference and our choice. People often nod, because what more can you say about that?
Sometimes he'll say "these kids are going to pay your social security" and I think that gets 'em thinking! I actually heard my Doctor repeat that to another Doc in his practise, "those kids will be paying your social security"!
