Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

For anyone who hasn't already heard about this made-for-TV movie - Tonight, August 15 (8 PM EST) Hallmark Channel will air the movie, A Man Who Became Pope about the early life of John Paul II. It looks really good. I have heard that Pope Benedict XVI was very impressed with it.

It will air again on Sunday, August 21 (9 AM EST). It is long - 4 hours.   Here is a video preview.

Thanks for posting this -- I'd heard it was going to be pretty good.

Which is great as we borrowed the BBC one on JP2 (Pope John Paul II) from the library and it was horrible -- extremely secular, lots of politics and light on the religion, dubious "experts" (I don't think ANY were over 30, all non-Catholics or non-practicing, etc) and just generally bad. The A&E one, JPII: Statesman of Faith , was very well done and talked to experts who were either there or are generally KNOWN as experts on JP2 or Cahtolicism.

We watched this last week and it was fantastic. I had meant to tape it when it was re-broadcast on Sunday but forgot to set the VCR.
I also have the tape Witness to Hope, planning to watch that soon. I had started the book and only read about 200 pages before needing to return it to the library when we left for vacation. I do plan to finish it eventually, but went ahead and got the video. It's not the whole book, right? Would it be interesting for a 12 yo to watch? He liked the one on TV last week.

Karen:

The Witness to Hope dvd is great! Your 12yo should find it very interesting. It covers up to Jubilee of 2000 and so has quite a bit of good "living history" to it.

The book, of course, is much more detailed and has more anecdotal info, -- a great history "spine" for high school.

Enjoy!

Oh, good. I had wanted to do a Pope John Paul II scrapbook/unit study, whatever, last spring but just couldn't fit it in. I saved a lot of magazines, articles, etc. to try and do it this year. I will use the video as a jumping off point, then, for ds and see what rabbit trails come from it.
