As many of you know, I'm due in December with blessing #2, a baby boy we plan to name Noel Edward.
I went for a follow-up ultrasound this morning to check his growth because I was measuring behind. Well, everything is great in that department, as I knew it would be. He is just the right size. However, what did show up is that his left kidney is multicystic and pretty badly damaged already. (Praise the Lord, the right kidney appears to be perfectly healthy and functioning well.)
This could mean one of two things: Multicycstic Dysplastic Kidney Disease, which is not treatable and will cause him to lose that kidney entirely, probably by age 5. The other possibility is Ureteropelvic Junction Obstruction, which (if the kidney is not too far gone already) is potentially treatable with an in-utero procedure with risks similar to that of amniocentesis, but of course there is a risk of going into labor prematurely (I'm 27 weeks) or losing the baby with that option, and I'm not sure I'm comfortable with that risk to fix a non-life-threatening problem (since the baby can live a normal life with only one kidney).
Please pray for wisdom as we are presented with options on Monday morning at the specialist's office. Pray for the continued healthy function of unaffected kidney, as the consequences would obviously be dire if that one were to present with problems, too. And pray for our whole family, that we would be able to calmly handle this and put our trust in God completely.

Praying! My daughter was born with a UVJ obstruction, but it wasn't found by ultrasound. We didn't find out that that was the problem until she was about 3 or so. She really only has one working kidney, but is pretty much okay. We will be praying for you!!!
