My littlest guy was scheduled to see a dentist for the first time last Friday, but we had to cancel due to a nasty cough/cold that has gripped half our family. He has started to kick the cold but now we have a dental complication arising ...
We rescheduled the dental appt. for tomorrow morning, but as luck would have it, he has developed a sore tooth and we don't know if it is a cavity or a molar coming in. The gum inside his back molars is swollen and his lower right cheek is puffy and he is really cranky.
I just gave him motrin to help ease the pain - which I never do because he is so intolerant of artificial flavors, etc. - but I want him to feel better. We just need to get him through the day and tonight!
No fever, and his cold symptoms seem to be abating, but sleep has been hard to come by ...
Strangely enough, my middle son also had a puffy-face, new molar thing happen just two weeks ago ... he was in a good deal of pain for a few days when it passed.
My little guy could sure use your prayers. He is 5 1/2 and has PDD which means all of this is even more challenging for him (and us). We are seeing a special needs dentist, so I am hoping and praying this man will have the senstivity and skill my son needs.
Thank you, everyone. Sorry I have not been on the boards much lately, I've found it necessary to cut back my computer time lately. As always though, I am keeping you all in my prayers.

Praying for your son, Dawn. I hope that the dentist will be able to relieve your sons pain without any much trauma for him or your family.

I'm so sorry, Dawn. I will keep him in my prayers. We've dealt with this before. The dentist told me to have him rinse with diluted peroxide until he could be seen. It worked very well.

Thank you all so much for your prayers!
Our little guy is doing better this morning - the swelling seems to be down a bit and he was able to get some sleep last night (I think due to the motrin). We haven't given it to him this morning as he seems comfortable, but we may give it to him again before his appointment.
He'll see the special needs dentist at 11:30 this morning. It was supposed to be just a cleaning/meet-and-greet but obviously we'll need to address this situation first.
I just pray my little guy can keep it together. We're all going with him, so he'll have his "support team" in place.
Thank you again, for those prayers! I'll update later after we get home ...

I'm glad to hear he was able to rest last night and will be praying that the visit isn't too stressful for him. Hopefully he'll feel much better this afternoon!

Well, we're back and it went better than I hoped - I'm just glad it's over!
First, though, the bad news: our little guy does in fact have a cavity - and it had abcessed! (Hence the swelling and discomfort!)
The cavity had formed between two molars, both baby teeth, and he will have to have it pulled by an oral surgeon within a week or two. We were referred to an os that specializes in children, and our son will be put out for the minute it takes to pull the tooth. Our oldest has had a grand total of ten teeth pulled over the past few years, so we know the routine. It won't be fun, but it will be quick.
The good news is this new dentist was *wonderful* and I am very glad to have found him. He was gentle and kind and obviously knows how to handle special needs children. Our son was not happy about the whole thing, but he *did* get through it. With both dh and me there, AND his two older brothers, it was very much a family affair!
Thank you again for your prayers - I know they helped tremendously throughout this experience! If you would, please say one more prayer that his mouth heals quickly - I'll post again when we have our surgery date.
God bless!

Wow, Dawn! I'm so sorry about the cavity! EB has been in my prayers. I'm sorry that you all have such the experience in tooth-extractions. Praying that it goes smoothly, both physically and emotionally.
