I am absolutely failing my 7yo dd. I cannot teach her. I am a heartbeat away from registering her in the public school around the corner.
Every thing we do is a battle. EVERYTHING. I have tried so hard this year to focus on spending time with her, including so many of the activities she enjoys and three days in I feel like weeping.
I so need mercy and forgiveness, I have not been a good mother to her today.

Maria, hang in there and pray some more. My close friends know that I have really struggled with one of my children. When said child was seven, I did not want to homeschool period because of the child. My husband wisely told me that enrolling her in school would not solve the problems that we were having. Everything, from having her get dressed in the morning to getting in bed at night was a battle. She is passively defiant which is very hard because I don't know if she is really defiant or if something else is going on.
Things that have helped are consistency, prayer, patience, more prayer, phrasing what I want to see in a positive way (i.e. "Yesterday, you finished x number of Math problems in 30 minutes, let's see if you can finish the same number or more today."), building said child up with my comments, making sure that she knows that she is unconditionally loved (my love for her is not dependent on her compliance or non-compliance), and being fully present. The last is very important for my child. If I am on the computer at random times, I can guarantee that my child will not have a good day. My heart sang the other night, when after our nightly rosary, my child prayed that she would listen better.
You and your daughter will be in my prayers. Home education isn't easy, but it is definitely worth it.

Oh, Maria---I feel your pain! Hang in there and know you are being held up by a network of mothers who understand and support you, and that God will give you the grace to get through this.

A lady in my HS TORCH had a similar experience with her son around that age. She said he was horrible all year- would not let her teach him and was disruptive to all her other dc. She planned to enroll him in the church school
the following fall- but in the fall their budget wouldn't stretch to cover it, so she kept him home after all. That year was much, much better, and she said she was so glad that it all worked out that way.
I'm praying- hang in there.

Maria,
We have 6 children. I felt the same as you do today about one. I felt he brought me to my knees. Everything about him is different than the other children or even how my dh and I were as children. It completely threw us off (even at times today). It was a daily battle it seemed. I use the past tense. That what it will become for you too thankfully.
He is now 10 (just turned). Life is so much more pleasent (not without it's bumps for sure). I couldn't see me homeschooling him sucessfully. It seemed that was the last of our priorities with his behavior. My mom kept telling me to circle him with love. We went to visit my parents one time (out of state) and she lost it with him. I said, "Hey Mom, what happened to circle with love?" You don't want to hear her reply.
She was right though (as we moms so often are). I started responding to him completely opposite of how I normally did when his behavior crossed the line. Instead of saying anything to him, I stopped and walked up to him and hugged him closely and gently. I didn't say a word each time. He fought me but gave in immidiately to the warmth of unconditional love.
Try it. It works. Circle her with love.
God Bless,
Linda
