Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We're going on an expedition to discover the gems in Tomie dePaola's work! He's done so much, as both an author and an illustrator. We'll read some of his 26 Fairmont Avenue books--these are mostly new to us. In fact, I think I put a hold on every Tomie book at the library that is new to me. I'll share the best ones with my kids!

We're going to read one story for each month--some of these we will reread for that actual month, but these are either some of my favorites or recommended books we want to "discover" for ourselves:
January--Days of the Blackbird.
February--Now One Foot Now the Other
March--The Clown of God
April--Petook: An Easter Story
May--Mary the Mother of Jesus
June--Legend of the Bluebonnet
July--The Parables of Jesus
August--The Popcorn Book (not very literary, but looks fun, and hey, Tomie loves popcorn!)
September--Strega Nona
October--Christopher The Holy Giant
November--Nana Upstairs Nana Downstairs
December--An Early American Christmas

(I deliberately left out most of the saint books--esp. Patrick, Francis, The Lady of Guadalupe--because we will cover them in a different unit later. Ditto on the Christmas books!)

I'm going to peruse Tomie dePaola: His Art and Stories and Teaching with Favorite Tomie dePaola Books. They are more for an older audience, I suppose, but I will see what I can glean from them.

I'll also get Tomie dePaola's Book of Poems to introduce some poetry into our unit.

We're going to read The Art Lesson and do an art study. No ideas yet but I have faith inspiration will strike! (Suggestions also welcome. I know some of you have had fun with this book--What have you done?) We'll probably pick a picture or two from other books for picture study.

Some other things to do:
