Joann the skirts are lovely! I especially like that second one with the flair. What pattern(s) did you use?

Very cute, indeed! I can't wait until I work up to being able to do things like that!

So what are you waiting for? Skirts are a great beginning project!

Thanks ladies, I used McCall's pattern M5429 for the flair skirt and McCall's M5431 for the other. (McCall's patterns were on sale this past weekend for $1.99 at Joann Fabrics )
Theresa, if you want to make a skirt I would make the second--the darn fly and all those flairs were really challenging me, and I have been sewing since I was 13.

Joann,
They are lovely!! I'm dying to run out and get the patterns! Do you mind sharing what's the smallest size they come in? I need a size 14 youth. Is this in the women's sizes or youth.
Thanks! Again, great job!! They are so beautiful and "stylish." I need skirts to be beautiful. But my girls need them stylish. Its rare to be able to find both features in a skirt now a days!!
Also, here are some skirts I made a few weeks ago. Again, I would love to make some more trendy ones for dd. I'm crossing my fingers that the pattern comes in a small enough size.

Lillian, the flair skirt is a women's size 4-12, and it give a waist measurement of 22 inches for that.
The other is women's 6-14, 6 having a 23 inch waist.
They both have fitted waistbands with a fly or back zipper-no nice stretchy elastic- .
I hope this helps.

Ummm...well...I'm waiting to work up the courage to risk wasting that much fabric!LOL!
Honestly, I'd love to do a skirt and I have some nice fabric (perhaps not enough for my wide load!LOL!), but what I need is an ultra-simple pattern. I have no clue how to do zippers or button holes yet and those complicated-looking ruffles scare me!
Maybe one for my little girl with a simple elastic or drawstring waist?

Theresa,
I made some skirts for my dd that were very simple. You can see them here. The pattern I used was Simplicity #8550.
It has an elastic waist. Only two pieces to cut out. And didn't take much time at all.
I agree with Michelle, the best way to learn is by jumping in!! I can't begin to tell you how much fabric I wasted. Clearance table are the best way to go when buying material in the beginning.
Good luck!!

Not wasted - experimented on. Do you consider it a waste of paper when one is learning to draw or paint? Doing is learning in this case. Really, like any other handicraft you just need to jump in there and try it.
Basic, simple elastic waist skirts are a great place to start. Patterns for them abound - though you don't really need one.
Tiered skirts are a good place to begin as well.

Ok, maybe I can swing this. Lillian, the ones you made look less intimidating to me than others. Thanks! Is there a simple tutorial somewhere on putting elastic in a waistband? Or for that matter, does anyone know of a site that has a collection of tutorials on sewing basics?
