Has anyone here used Glad Rags or better yet, made their own? I would really like to switch from the organic cotton disposable products I use now, but I just cant afford the investment (a kit would cost around two hundred dollars). It would be so much better for the environment and I know Id save money over time. Id like to make my own, since I always have lots of cotton flannel fabric around the house.
If anyone has created templates for these and is willing to share them, or who at least has the dimensions down pretty good would share them with me, Id appreciate it.
I would have put this in the crafter forum but Im new here and I didnt know if a thread about making your own hygeine products would freak people out in a crafting forum.

I have used cotton pads from many companies, and the ones I like the best are New Moon Pads (though I do suggest getting some moon wraps to go with... I didn't like Lunapads, but I did get them a long time ago.

Thank you for the link! These look very nice and a little more affordable than the Glad Rags. Id still like to make my own, but this is another design to consider.

Oh! Just thought of the other company I liked. It is called TLC Pads and they do offer the option of pre-cut pads that you sew yourself. It might give you a better idea of how to do it, what supplies/materials you would need, etc.

I have bought several different kinds also and like my Homemade Mama kind the best. I tried many years ago to make my own, but I am no seamstress and they were horrible, lol. Maybe someday I'll brave that again.

I intended at one time to make the ones here but never got around to it. Now, I think I'd buy Mother of Eden pads - this is the same company that makes Fuzzi Buns, to give you an idea of the quality.

I have made my own before. Just like the ones at the link Tracy posted
They were very easy to make, rather inexpensive, and much more comfortable than the chafing I was getting with store bought.
I tend to use the store bought still though, more for my convenience though

Thank you for all the great links!
I actually went ahead and decided to take a stab at it myself, and after a few adjustments....well, OK Im still working out the bugs, BUT I have several useable pads that are not so ugly that Id be embarassed if anybody saw them...so that's a start, right? I also sewed an attractive draw-string (actually draw-ribbon) bag to hang in my bathroom for the purpose of keeping the soiled ones until I throw them in the washing machine at bedtime.
Im pretty darn proud of myself. It really wasnt too difficult and I had forgotten how wonderfully soothing the whirrrrrrr of the sewing machine can be. AND my seven year old son is suddenly fascinated with the sewing machine, so I got to explain to him how it works. Maybe he will want to give sewing a try next.
Thanks again for all the responses! This is such a nice group!

I started with GladRags, purchasing a few each month - but the cost was just astronomical and I wasn't entirely satisfied with them (I hate inserts of any kind for this type of product). Eventually, I made my own, simply by taking the shape of my usual undergarments so that the pads are form fitted; some I made with extra length for nighttime. I purchased soft material on the scrap racks at Joann's and others, cut out several layers of each, with some absorbent material in the middle (I can't remember now what it's called - it came in a large package, rolled up...) - then each one has a pretty flowery patterned cover that has it gets old I can cut it off and sew another one on.

I have some MOE and some Happy Heiny's and some homemade. I like the MOE AIO the best, my homemade second, and Happy Heiny's least. I think b/c the MOE and mine are longer and I tend to need that. The MOE have lasted me for years now. Granted, I don't cycle much, but they've been great pp too!

I forgot to mention before, but another great option is a Keeper. I don't have one yet (haven't gotten around to getting one, as I rarely cycle) but I have many friends who swear by it.

I used to have ones that I bought (before 11 years of pregnancy and nursing!) that would be easy to make.
They had unbleached thin muslin covers- the length and width you wanted than doubled over to open in the middle of the bottom (hope that made sense). Then you sew both the ends . Inside I folded pieces of flannel (old diapers) as many times and as thick as I needed. With these you were supposed to leave a gap at each end and thread through an elastic to wear them, but I just used a diaper pin (always seemed to be at hand) and safety pinned them in.
I am going to try to make some this month again, but my problem now is that I seem to be making up for lost time in flow. I thought about using goretex or something not chaffy but waterproof on the bottom.

Kristie -- ok this might sound weird, but the first thing that came to my mind was what if you take one of those felt-lined plastic table cloths and use that as the bottom layer --- plastic side in, naturally, for the pads you are going to use while your flow is heavy? I would imagine it would still breathe through the top layers and you would not feel the plastic against your skin that way.
Im attaching the ones I made with diaper pins too :-). I managed to make several daytime pads and a couple of longer ones for nights. Im very happy with the results so far, and I figure the more I make them, the more bugs I can iron out.
Thank you all again for the input.
