Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Ah, now I have a name! Thanks, Theresa!

My neighbor was admiring our gourd plant last month (we weren't sure if it was watermelon, pumpkin, or gourd) when she saw the bird's nest fungus growing on the mulch. She thought it was little nests for some kind of wasp (it does kind of look like the inside of a wasp's nest), but I assured her it was some sort of fungus. Now there's a name to go with it...

People always think I'm joking when I tell them they have Dog Vomit Fungus (slime mold) growing in their mulch. That sure is what it looks like!

Thanks, Theresa! I think it's really funny that you said "cool" when I was kind of grossed out. Valerie, we had the dog vomit in our yard many times. I think that one doesn't bother me as much because it doesn't seem to spread. I'm kind of scared of new fungi because we had stinkhorns at our last house and once they spread we couldn't get rid of them. Oh, and they were really gross.

Well, as folks at the conference heard during my ramblings, I am committed to learning more about fungus this year. It is one area of nature study that I feel very uninformed about and I want to remedy that.I just have not found a really good resource yet.
And I agree with you about the stinkhorns. Interesting, but gross!
