Hello, all!

My two daughters (ages 5 and 7) are intrigued by hand clapping games. We stayed up last night, and again tonight, giggling on my bed as I tried to teach them some hand clapping moves that I learned when I was their age. I found it difficult to sing some of the chants that went with the clapping, cause, uuuhhh, let's just say, that the ones I learned in school are NOT worth repeating ! I googled "hand clapping songs" and what I got was a lot more rude, crude stuff.

So tell me, do you, or your daughters have any cute chants to sing while hand-clapping, or jumping rope for that matter?

This is practically the only innocent one I remember from my childhood ...does anyone remember this one?

Miss Suzie had a baby
The baby's name was Jim
She put him in the bathtub
To see if he could swim

He drank up all the water
He ate up all the soap
He tried to eat the bathtub
But it wouldn't go down his throat

Miss Suzie called the Doctor
Miss Suzie called the Nurse
Miss Suzie called the lady
with the alligator purse

In came the Doctor
In came the Nurse
In came the lady
with the alligator purse

Out came the water!
Out came the soap!
Out came the bathtub,
That wouldn't go down his throat!

Thanks for indulging me in this silly request!!!!

Miss Mary Mack, Mack, Mack
All dressed in black, black, black
With silver buttons, buttons, buttons
All down her back, back, back

If you google it, you'll find it. It's really long, and I had to google it to learn all the verses.

A couple my daughter does:

A Sailor Went to Sea, Sea, Sea
A sailor went to sea sea sea
To see what he could see see see
And all that he could see see see
Was the bottom of the deep blue sea sea sea.

Down by the banks of the hanky panky,
Where the bull frogs jump from bank to bank-y
With a hip-hop, flipity-flop,
Missed that bank-y and went ker-plop.

Site with some handclapping games - all okay except Miss Susie #1 - is that one of the ones you were remembering.

Thanks Marianne and Mary! Mary I didn't catch that site in my search. Yeah, that one with Miss Suzie is one of the ones I couldn't repeat. The other sites that I visited had rhymes that were just plain rude...lots of teenage rebellion, promiscuity themes...you can't believe what Miss Mary Mack is up to these days !

I know there was a book of these that was very popular around 15 years ago. It was related to a book of jumprope rhymes that was called Anna Banana. The hand-clapping rhymes included all the old standards along with some I'd never encountered. Sorry I can't remember anything more specific, as, you see, I am very old, having daughters who were interested in such a thing 15 years ago!

Peace,
Nancy

I remember doing the handclap to "CeeCee My Playmate" and there was one about McDonald's:

Big Mac, Fillet of Fish
Quarter Pounder, French Fries
Icy coke, ice cream
Cherry or an apple pie.

It was probably invented by McDonald's as a tricky marketing tool.

For jump rope, I remember "Cinderella dressed in yellow" of course I'm not sure the reference to Indian Chiefs is completely PC anymore. And then there was "Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear".

Interesting thread.

Okay - I was cleaning out some older boxes of books and guess what I found? The hand-clapping rhymes book I mentioned! It is called Miss Mary Mack (and Other Children's StreetRhymes) by Joanna Cole and Stephanie Calmenson, published by Beech Tree Books in 1990. Maybe it is still around? There is also a section at the end called "Where to Find More" that is a list of 13 other books also containing similar rhyme games. If anyone is interested, I can share those sources, although I don't know how easy they would be to get now.

Peace,
Nancy

My daughters LOVE to clap to "Double Double This This ..."

I never thought about Miss Mary Mack. We've been reading it for years!! Thanks for the ideas. I'll pass them onto my daughters!!

Does anyone remember the one that has:

Shimmie Shimmie coco pop
Shimmie shimmie pop!

Then something about the postman?

Then one with "ABC, my momma drinks cold coffee"?
Then something about "Moms having a baby, Dads going crazy, if it's a boy we'll give it a toy, if it's a girl we'll give it a curl?"

And I always liked the jump rope one with the TeddyBears, and you had to do all the different things (turn around, touch the ground) while still jumping.

My brain is having trouble remembering them .

I do remember the "naughty" one, where you almost but not quite say bad words, but we called it Miss Lucy, I think, and I remember the Nuns YELLING at us about that one

Anna Banana is a great jump rope book. we have it and use it all the time.

I have a couple books with all these in them, I'll see if I can round them up.
