Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I was reading a book to dd5.

I am from NJ, and although I have lived in AZ for 18 years now, I still seem to have an accent on a few words. Not many, but words like coffee, dog, etc, you can hear it.

So, I am reading a rhyming book to dd5. And the words are going along fog, log, frog...and dog....which, if you are from where I am from in NJ, does not rhyme with the rest of them. As soon as I get to the "dog" part, DD17 can be heard cracking up in the other room, and then even harder as I try to say it so it will rhyme.

DD5 looks at me and says, "No Mommy, you talk funny, it is dddaaahhhgggg." All slow and drawn out for me, so I don't miss it, ya know?

Just wanted to share...

LOL, having grown up in NJ myself, this cracks me up! Of course those words don't rhyme.

I just read this to my husband who grew up on Long Island (his dad is from the Bronx) and the minute I started reading "coffee" he started laughing.

He talks funny, too!

Ok, I'm clueless here. How does one from NJ pronounce dog?

Cause here in the south they all rhyme: LAWG, FAWG, HAWG, DAWG.
See? Simple!

At least for me, the closest I can get to spelling how I say dog is "dawg", but then the others are more like "lahg" "frahg" "hahg" etc.

When I first met my husband I didn't know why he thought it was "cute" and "New York" the way I pronounced a word like "terrible." I guess that hard short e and other vowels before r like in horrible and carry is one of the more subtle components of a New York accent (I lived in Brooklyn the first 21 years of my life.)

As recently as the last presidential race he (a native Northern Virginian) once said to me something about "John Carey" and I thought along the lines of, "Okay, he's not from NY so translate that to John Carrey. But who is that? Does Jim Carrey have a brother?" and it took a moment to dawn on me that of course he meant John Kerry.
