I have a map of the world that I got from the Target dollar spot. The continents are colored individually, but not in the exact same colors as the Montessori maps. For instance, South America is lime green, and Australia is purple.
Okay, here's my question---since I don't have the wooden maps (I've got Geopuzzles), could I just go with this color scheme for all of our continent work from now on? I'm thinking of mounting this onto foam board and cutting the continents out to make my own continent map. Is there any reason why it wouldn't work to go with the color scheme of this map from Target?

This is exactly my plan! I just started to paint my globe just like the Target map!
I would think the color does not much matter as long as everything follows.

I ordered some maps that came in today, and they look like something I can work with. They're made by Frank Schaffer Publishing, and I got them for $2 apiece. I have one for each continent, and also one of the world parts, so 8 maps in all. They're color-coded also, just not exactly like the Montessori maps. Now that I've thought it over, it really won't matter. The color coding of these maps will become our color coding. I plan on gluing them to foam board that I bought at Dollar Tree. I will probably use the Geopuzzles, and possibly use these for pin maps. I really would like to attempt to make these into puzzle maps, but I'm not sure I could have good luck with cutting them out through the foam board.
I also found a wall chart of geographical features that is very nice for $2. It's made by Carson-Dellosa, and on the back are definitions for all the geographic features. My thought is to google images of them, print them out, and make separate cards with the definitions to match.
I will plan on painting my Target dollar globe to match the colors of these maps. Whew! Thank goodness I haven't finished painting them yet before I decided on the coloring!

Fantastic! I do not see any reason why they should be a particular color, as long as there is consistency. Especially if it means saving yourself some money and some headaches!

Vicki, this sounds like a great plan I agree with the color coding, as long as all your materials are consistent within each other, it doesn't matter what color everyone else has! Would love to see pictures when you're finished!!
Blessings.

I just thought I'd post an update about our use of the Geopuzzles. He seemed to enjoy the one we tried, but I'm not sure I'm happy with it. Some of the states seemed to be "chopped off" a bit, with part of a neighboring state on the same piece. I also found it odd that there is an inset of the Aleutian Islands next to Calif. and Mexico. Florida, for example, has part of the Atlantic Ocean included with it's piece.

Concerning the Aleutian Islands: my wooden puzzle of North America has them cut off about halfway out. And my USA one has the entire state of Alaska as an inset next to Mexico, with such a reduced scale as to render it embarrassingly small. The detail of the Alaska puzzle piece is not as good as the other pieces, and again, the Aleutian chain is cut off about halfway (or less). Hawaii isn't even a puzzle piece, it is just painted on.
The Aleutian chain in reality is something like 1200 miles long, so to include it all on the NA map would mean extending the map that much further. But still it would be nice if it were more accurate. The highly reduced scale for the state of Alaska on the USA map is bothersome, but fairly common.

Hmmm, looks like I need to be happy with what I've got. Especially for the price I paid too! I thought that the wooden maps were entirely accurate, so it's good to know that the comparison between the two is not so far off. I imagine once I try cutting my own map out, I'll truly sympathize with the map makers!
