Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Would those of you who've followed this rabbit trail already be willing to share some of your favorite books and/or activities?   My 7 and 5 yr. old watched Pocohantas, and now they want to learn more!

Did you do notebooks and/or lapbooks at this age?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Blessings,
Ginny

There are a few free unit studies at Homeschool Share that relate to Native Americans
Native American Connections

My best friend used these Native American History Pockets with her students and loved them. She had four different ages/grade levels going on and said everyone enjoyed them and learned a lot.

If you check out Tobins Lab, they have a book there called "The Ultimate Lap Book Guide" by Tammy Duby (owner of Tobin's Lab) Besides showing basic how-tos, it also has some pretty cool ideas for a lapbook on Indians. More presentation ideas than content, but nifty ideas, especially for the younger set. I believe they suggested those "History Pockets", too.

Also, if you go to "Search", then search "It's a Great Big WOrld" and type in American Indians in the topic listing, there's a thread on resources for studing Indians that might help.

We are doing a unit this year on Pre-Colonial Native Americans. Here is what is in my book basket so far:

Om-Kas-Toe: Blackfeet Twin Captures Elkdog by Kenneht Thomasma

North American Indians by Marie and Douglas Gorsline

If you Lived with the Siouxby Ann McGovern

If you lived with the Hopi by Anne Kamma

If you lived with the Iroquois by Ellen Levine

The Legend is the Indian Paintbrush by Tommie dePaola

Moonstick by Eve Bunting

Hope that helps!

Another good kids book, "The Story of Blue Jacket" nee Marmaduke van Swearingen. About a frontier boy who willingly joined the Shawnee and rose to prominence as a great war leader. Very good book.
