Hi all,
I have an issue... The past few times we have been to the bookstore, my dc all want twaddle My ds 9yrs, is the only one who can read- he wants the Bionocle chapter books or Star Wars... ok fine so long as there isn't anything objectionable (what happened to Henry and Ribsy, or Mouse on a Motorcycle?
The greater problem comes in with my 5yr old. He can't read but wants twaddly chapter books like his big brother, or some hardback comic-book-character style book He can't read so it's all about the bling. He doesn't want to be a "baby" anymore with the truck, train, animal type books.... So, my solution/ compromise this time was Owl Puke- "what was I thinking?!? Eeeeewwwwwww gross"
Then there is the 3yrold... stuffed animals at the bookstore? Will they do anything for a buck
This post could also address the issue of the library and the insipid computer games! I thought it would be all about the books but my kids want computer games and bling*bling* books
Soooooo how do you guys deal with these things? Do you have rules for going to the bookstore? Never take a nonreader? How 'bout the library? No computer ever? Help please.
God Bless,
Alison

Alison,
When I want to browse the bookstore (or library, for that matter) I NEVER take the kids ... it's too distracting and heart-wrenching for them and I get a bit dictatorial .
That said, when I do take them it's with the understanding that they may pick one book, but I have full (and fully imposed) veto power ... the books with the toys , the twaddle comic books , and just ugly stuff get a big NO. But I do show them where the craft books, DK non-fiction and better quality books reside .... I sometimes pay more than the shiny twaddle, but it's worth it in the long run!

I make two library trips a week...one without the kids with my pre-researched list for what we need for unit studies etc...then one with the kids for story time and their book choosing time. Most of the time my oldest just brings the book he's reading that I've given him and doesn't even get anything else. The little ones make these huge stacks, and sometimes I don't even check them all out and they've forgotten about it when we get home. I don't take mine to the bookstore. We make amazon.com wish lists, and I ask gift givers to get books or gift cards from there. I do take my oldest to rummage through the used book store with me. That's a book lovers' past time and it's one of my favorite things in the world, so I want to pass it on to them...there, the bling factor is mitigated and instead, it's the smell and feel of old books, 1st editions, and well-loved classics that become appealing. Hope that helps.

Thanks! Boy am I glad to hear my kids are just normal!
Mary I think that is the wiser choice- to not take the kids !!
Angie I really like the idea of using Amazon wish lists- that is really smart!
My new tactic is to take them ONLY to the used bookstore when they have pocket money to spend. That way if it is twaddle at least it's only .50- $1 and I won't feel guilty if I end up tossing a book in the trash later
I will only use the local bookstore for my pleasure or for things we just can't get at the library or used bookshop!
Thanks for your advise and for letting me vent!
Alison
