Is it possible? I love the looks of the Pottery Barn catalogs that are delievered to my mail box almost daily , but I can't afford those prices. I would love to have my main school area look like this. Has anyone been able to create the look without the price? My dh is usually up for my crazy projects and we enjoy trips to Ikea and the hardware store.

Well, I can't believe what is on the Pottery Barn, PB Teen, and Pottery Barn Kids Clearance sites on the web. My sister generously regifted me with 100.00 gift card she had had for quite awhile. This is what I got:
Two complete towel sets, white with ribbon trim in lavendar and yellow, and mint green, a gorgeous 89.00 retail hanging pendant style lamp, a queen sheet set for dh and myself, two extra pillowcases that coordinate with sheet set, a pillowcase and matching sham for dd, AND a coordinating orginizer box that matches my sheet set. I think I ended up paying 7.00 and some change to cover part of the shipping.
SO, check out the clearance!!

MC - I dreamed of the PB school rooms for a while!! But had to go for other options (including Staples and Ikea).

But are you good at put together furniture??

Have you looked at Staples furniture lately?? Some of it is really PB like and cool. And unlike PB, over $50 comes with free shipping.

ETA: And my IKEA kids table that is now survived all four of my boys so far with flying colors -- came with 2 chairs, we stained it honey oak --- all for $32. I'm sure it's $40 now... but still!!

Mary Chris, Our home is decorated in this style and we bought very little from Pottery Barn itself. While I bought quality furniture, I save alot by buying my frames, vases, art work, rugs, pillows, etc. from Target and other less expensive stores.

My schoolroom is denim blue with honey colored cubbies and shelves lining the walls. It is a tiny room with sloping rooflines so it does not resemble that photo you linked very much. We have a futon sofa and a recliner in there for read alouds which makes it pretty homey.

I like the Pottery Barn look because it is practical and yet visually appealing. I don't think we have to forsake one for the other.

And JoAnna, I am with you on that phone recharging thing. Very cool!

I have seen desk stations like this at Target before. It looks like the key would be finding one with enough space in the bottom section to house a power strip (although I wonder if you would have to remove the back so that it doesn't get overheated) and then drill the holes and notches for the power cords.

As far as the school room goes, those bucket shelves would be a cinch if you had the right kind of hole saw but you could also cut out holes from an existing shelf using a jig saw and a very steady hand.

I really like some of their ideas and just might have to try them.

Target is definitely a good idea. Are you anywhere near a Pottery Barn outlet? They have great deals there.

Pottery Barn has outlets??! Oh, I wish there was one in my territory.

And we've been eye-balling the desks at Staples, too. We just haven't decided where it will go exactly and then what color. As soon as we figure those out and dh gets some overtime, that recharge station is mine! That'll be the only PB part of the set-up, I'm sure...

Hmmm...interesting challenge...I love the idea!
You can get blackboard paint at Home Depot and use it wherever you want to...
The metal pails I have seen at Michaels...
I got a great table from a family member that was a small round kitchen table and my fil cut down the legs and it makes a very nice looking kid table.
If your dh knows how to cut holes in wood, you can get a pre-made shelf and drill holes in it for the pails...
I have even seen seasonal pails at Michaels, come to mention it (like bunnies at Easter time...etc) You can always spray paint them if they aren't the correct color.

It wouldn't be hard to take a pre-existing book shelf and add dowels for a paper roll...
For all the extra do-dads, you can spray paint anything you may need to co-ordinate the colors...right down to wooden letters from Michaels and the peg board from Home Depot.

You can purchase cork at any office supply store or Target...
we were planning to do a small wall in our hallway with cork for display purposes and covering it with clear plexiglass that has holes pre-drilled in it for mounting screws and washers so that we can have art down low for the toddler to see and not eat or shred into 1000 pieces...

Cheap frames can be hung (hey spray paint those too if made from wood ;) for a select piece of children's artwork of the week!

Well...no time to proof read...toddler in need of me...

HTH!
God love you!

i used magnetic chalkboard paint to cover the glass panes of a vintage window and the backs of our watchmakers cases (somewhere in a discussion here...they look just like those round magnet things on pb...we labeled the panes by nature category and put items from nature study in the correct space...it is sooooo cm goes pottery barn, i adore it! also...here's my other pb trick, buy the sheets, skip the quilts, make curtains, toss pillows, and bed skirts out of the sheets and buy an inexpensive plain comforter.

I Love PBK!! I love that they also own Williams Sonoma sooo.. if you can get to a PB outlet, you'll get the fun of browsing the sales all in one store.
JoAnna... check out "Prime Outlet" locations.. You are in NC, I know there is one in the Atlanta area.

I agree.. Clearance on line and craigslist is a good start. Also I have found if you call the 1-800 number, sometimes they have "unadvertised" specials that you won't get online..otherwise you can tell them what you are interested in ordering and they may take off extra $$. I was shocked when I called looking for something on the phone and they offered me ten dollars off if I ordered right then ..

LOL!
Me too! Every piece of furniture in our house we have either been given (used) or have picked up at yard sales or thrift stores(and it shows!LOL!). With the exception of our master bedroom furniture which we bought new -our first splurge in 15 years of marriage. And now dh isn't even here to enjoy it!
Honestly, though, Marychris I think you could remake that school room of yours into that style easily with some warm colored paint and a few throw rugs.

My sister loves pottery barn and I would love to surprise her with information about an outlet, but I wasn't able to find a single link. Any ideas?
