I just spent the weekend on bedrest due to contractions. Saw a doc. today and was told so far no dilation (thank you, Lord) but to take it easy. I'm drinking *tons* of water and staying down as best as I can, but y'all know how that is with lots of children in the house...
Is this common after having a bunch of healthy pregnancies? Someone tell me I am going to make it through the next 15 weeks...

Was there anything that might have triggered the contractions? dehydration (I know you said you're drinking lots now but could that have started 'em?), upset digestive tract?

Overtired??? We started school and I've been trying to do everything...
And I had not had enough water that day. But the second day I had the contractions I was only 1/2 as active and had had more water. The second day the contractions were worse (as in harder, actually painful, and I am not a wimp when it comes to pain ).
I dunno what else it could be. The doctor's office keeps saying its just because I've had multiple pregnancies that I can expect this kind of thing...but I'm not sure if that's true since its just *so* easy to blame everything on being multi parip, kwim???

Books...........I never had them in any other pregnancy........but in my sixth pregnancy........starting at 15 weeks, till delivery, but better the last two months...........I often had UC's worse than some of my labors.
No dilation at all. I just rested when they were bad........napping on couch watching old movies with the kids ...........tooks LOTS of warm baths...........which helped a lot.....and took a homeopathic remedy.....that helped sometimes, too.....I am having a blank on the exact remedy....but it useful for menstrual cramps, too.....what is it?????
...and, started using paper plates, and letting the kids learn to feed themsleves
oh, and asked for prayers from these great ladies!

hmmm.. you are supposed to have stronger braxton hicks with later pregnancies.. calcium helps smooth muscle contract without cramping.. I'd probably try upping my calcium (works for labor and the after pains after delivery too!)

Books - I started very frequent and strong contractions at 24 weeks - scared the wits out of me. I ended up in the hospital - they could see the contractions but no dilation or effacement at all. I took Procardia for a couple of days - but then I came off as the contractions were not having any effect on the cervix. I never had any restrictions and just had to live with the contractions. Water and a rest in the afternoon with my feet up did help. I did lose my plug at 31 weeks and took things easy (eg no unnecessary driving or shopping etc) until 35 weeks. The contractions continued - but I ended up being induced at 39 weeks as no dilation!!
I would definitely keep checking in with your doctor - as preterm labor can be controlled. I never really take the contractions lightly (but then my twins were born at 32 weeks) - but with my last 2 pregnancies I did have non productive contractions for weeks - and ended up going almost full term.
I will pray for you.

I had these beginning at week 24 this past pregnancy (my third to go to term). They initially did not change the cervix, but the Dr. began observing changes at around 32 weeks. I made it to 36 weeks and everything was fine - after weeks of bedrest to keep him in there! In any case, I agree with the others, lots of rest and water, and as long as they are not changing your cervix, you're in good shape!
There is a swab test they can do to see if you are likely to go into preterm labor in the next couple of days. I had this done several times, because if I were to have a baby before 36 weeks here (in a rural mtn. area), I would need to be airlifted to the nearest city, so they wanted to have advance notice if possible!
Good luck!

Books, my last baby (8th) arrived at 36 weeks very much by suprise, so this time around I've been much more careful. BH can be very strong in grandmutiparas mothers, so it can be very hard to distinguish between what could be preterm labor and bothersome BH. I have had 3 intances in the past month where I thought they were probably a little stronger than I'd like for BH, so I upped my liquid intake in a big way, it's not just about drinking plenty, it's about drinking MORE than plenty, and spent lots of time laying on my left side. An herbal rememdy that I have used also is catnip. It's a slight sedetive and muscle relaxer.
Now I'm creeping up on 38 weeks and have no interest in slowing things down! LOL!

How much is more than plenty? I tend to be a camel, that doesn't drink until all of a sudden hours and hours later I'm parched (I know, bad...but old habits die hard!). I'd really like to up my water intake to the appropriate amount in my last few weeks, but I don't know what that is.

What would I do without you guys!?!?!
Thank you so much for all the stories and advice. I felt like I needed a frame of reference for this new thing. I do NOT want to go on bedrest, as you can imagine.
I am drinking around 1 1/2 gallons a day, closer to 2 gallons when I am experiencing contractions (as in, drink 1 gallon in 1 1/2 hrs). I am so sick of water I could scream, and my kids think its hysterical how often I need to use the restroom.

I had that alot with my last pregnancy. Seemed like every two weeks from 28 weeks on I thought I was in labor. It got to the point where I kept questioning myself.
Lots of warm baths helped slow things down (it won't stop you if your already in labor though)and my midwife told me to take the homeopathic remedy Caulophyllum whenever I felt they were getting too strong. It's supposed to slow down contractions. I went through a few bottles of that.
I'm already experiencing braxton hicks now and I'm only 11 weeks. They aren't very strong though.
