I am currently nursing an eight month old, and he's my fourth baby.

I've been battling a nasty toe nail fungus since I was pregnant with my first in 2001. I've been either pregnant or nursing since then and figured I could treat it when I was not carrying a baby or nursing one (which hasn't happened).

So, I went and saw a podiatrist about four months ago who said the only way to treat it was to remove the two large toenails (I told you! Yuck ) and to take Lamisil to get rid of the infection.

She told me to wean, and I told her I wasn't going to. She gave me a topical cream to put on until I wean, then she wants to put me on the Lamisil.

I contacted Dr. Jack Newmann who said I could take Lamisil while nursing, and started it, but the baby got really fussy, which I'm guessing were from side effects (GI distress, etc) so I stopped taking it.

I really want to get rid of this as it's spread to my other toe nails.

I saw a holistic doctor who said to use Tree Tea Oil, but it didn't seem to do much (actually got a bit worse).

Someone suggested it might be yeast overgrowth as I also have a huge problem with yeast.

Any suggestions? I want to wear sandals!

soak your foot in Borax, and do you take homeopathic remedies? There is one for yeast....Chari do you remember? I know their is Homeopathic Borax, which I would take if I were you, but there are others as well. Tea Tree oil I would keep using, I am surprised that it did not help.
Sometimes things appear to be getting worse before they get better because the remedies are getting to the source of the issue. Just my 2 cents.

You might also try a stronger form of Tea Tree Oil, you'd have to get it at an Aromatherapy type store or online to be strong enough, needs to be 100%. It should knock it out Good Luck!

I have been using tea tree for years. You may never totally get rid of the fungus, but you can control it. Best to keep your feet clean and dry and nails neatly trimmed. I use tea tree every morning and night, just a dab under the nails with a Qtip.

My two favorite sources are:

brambleberry

and:

olive tree soaps This one is owned by a dear friend of mine, who happens also to homeschool!

Thanks so much.

I do take homeopathic remedies, or supplements you could call it.

One is for flushing out bad toxins, esp after taking antibiotics. I can't remember the name. I'll have to check it when I take it next tonight.

I keep my nails trimmed as much as possible. The bottom of my feet are super dry.

I'll look for a stronger Tea Tree Oil as well.

I feel like my body is sort of unable to heal and stay healthy these days. I think this last baby did me in.

And I always get yeast infections. Always. That's why someone thought the fungus could actually be a yeast overgrowth.

I'd love to take a supplement to help control it.

I am a big sugar/carb nut. I'm sure that doesn't help.

People are always writing to the Dr. Gott column in the newspaper (which always kind of makes me smile, since his name means "Dr. God" . . . ) recommending Vicks Vap-O-Rub as a miracle cure for all kinds of things. The main thing it seems to be a cure for is toenail fungus. I think you just smear it on, and maybe put a sock on over it before bed.

It may well be kind of similar in composition to tea tree oil, now that I think of it, but people keep writing in to swear by it for fungal ailments, and it's certainly cheap and readily available, so might be worth a try?

Pax,

Sally

Really, I think this is the problem. You're feeding your fungus. Try the yeast cure diet and the tea tree and you'll be rid of it. And the bonus is that you'll feel a whole lot better too.

I've also heard of soaking in epsom salts. How much Borax are we talking about? What homeopathic remedy?

Love,

Constant yeast can be a sign of high blood sugar levels and even diabetes. Try a the diet change Elizabeth suggested and I'll bet you find a lot of relief.
