Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Good morning everyone!
I've just been down with a hideous flu for the past week - all 4 of us got it - so it was a miserable household but we're back in the land of the living now! Yippee.

I have been wondering how you all budget your spending for homeschool. Do you start with an amount at the beginning of the year or just spend as you go?

And how much do you allocate? Obviously we're all in very different financial situations but I thought this would be interesting.

Having only littlies we haven't ever had to spend much - even a lot of our toys have been gifts - so it's new terrain for us, even buying the basic learning materials.

If you've been homeschooling for a while - did you spend more at the beginning, or do you spend more now?

Amber, I'm a frugal homeschooler. I have, for the most part, tried to use what is free or very thrifty first before buying. I am in the process of deciding which materials to order for our homeschool from the Montessori suppliers. I am expecting an order tomorrow, and will base my decision on how that looks.

I search thrift stores for out-of-print titles that I want to use, then print off whatever else we need from Baldwin project. There's so much good literature there for free--just the cost of ink and paper!

I'm making quite a few things for our Montessori trays, and I feel that the money I'm saving there leaves room for a few splurges for things I really want and need. As far as spending from the beginning, yes, I did make a few purchases that haven't worked. Everyone does. I would suggest trying what's available free online first, check the dollar stores for some cheap additions, then make what you can. My advice is don't spend until you've tried what is available free or have the opportunity to check materials out in a store.

Oh, and I'm glad to hear ya'll are feeling better!
