Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi, Land O' Cotton (and any of you who also dwell in cotton country),

My girls just asked me where cotton comes from. I described the plant, and showed them pictures off the internet, but here's a question for you...

How hard would it be to get a sample of an open cotton boll still attached to a branch prior to harvest? It would seem like having something like that could pave the way for so many wonderful stories, so much history, geography, discussions of trade, etc.

Are there cotton growers in your area who would consider this if I contacted them? I'd be happy to PayPal for postage for a little envelope of the stuff. Would you be able to put me in touch with anyone? If that would be an imposition, I won't be offended if you tell me "no cotton-pickin' way"!

What do you think?

Hi Tracy!

The cotton bolls aren't open yet, but they've got blooms on the plants, so it won't be much longer. I have been wanting to get out and take pictures to post, but the heat index here is 117 degrees today! I'll try to get some tomorrow for our group here.

Anyway, I'd be glad to send you a cotton boll or two. I can probably get rice and soybeans too if you'd like them--no PayPal necessary!

I'll post on the boards here when the bolls are open, and just PM me your address so that I can send them out.

Vicki,

That would be so very kind of you. And yes, rice and soybeans would be amazing too. Anything I can send in return from the Land o' Lincoln?

Yikes, 117 degrees. I'll quit complaining about the heat and humidity in Chicago RIGHT NOW.

I'll PM you now so you've got my details.

Stay cool,

Tracy
