My ds started football camp yesterday. I am concerned with the heat and his not being well prepared.
Yesterday he vomited 5 times because his helmet was too tight..finally that was adjusted properly.
This morning the trainer called as ds was having cramps in his chest and was having trouble breathing. He is sitting out until after lunch. He fell asleep at 4 pm yesterday and wouldn't wake up to eat dinner. I spoke to him at 1:30 am ..he was looking for the Traumeel for his sore body. He couldn't stomach breakfast..so he was trying to start today with no fuel
I feel bad not pushing him more to prepare for football. He played last year and knew it was coming. He has been spending his time working and playing basketball until 11pm then staying up late and eating late
Anyone have advice on nutrition for the rigors of football training in this horrible heat. I am quite nervous while my dh doesn't seem very concerned.
Please keep all these young athletes in your prayers.

Praying, Tammy. My young football player pulled a hamstring last week which turns out to be a possibly season-ending injury. He was out of conditioning because of a recent virus and the heat was over 100 degrees down there in the foothills which they say contributes to injuries of that kind.
Anyway, I was going to say I asked about heat exhaustion last year and again this year and got some good advice.
Taking off the helmet between plays and splashing water on the head seemed to help Sean; also hydrating all day, not just during the practice.
I'll be checking on this thread in case you get any more ideas!

Tammy, what an awful week for football! Praying for the safety of Jeremy and all the kids.
No real advice here. Hopefully, the trainers are using good sense and keeping the kids well-hydrated and giving lots of breaks.

Tammy, it is a heat index of 110 today with no relief in sight, in fact it is supposed to get worse. My ds started H*ll weeks and I am worried for him as well. A few moms told us to buy Pedialyte, as opposed to gatorade, and to get that into them 24/7, even waking them at night to do so. It is much gentler on the stomach.
We have kept ds outside as much as possible this summer, to get his body used to the heat, and he's done pre conditining. I'm still worried and wondering how this will work out.
Praying for you and him,

Thanks...
Willa,
Sorry about your son. I will pray he recovers well.
My dh finally got a chance to sign up for softball last Spring and on the first practice (very cold evening) he pulled his hamstring and eventually played some of the last games of the summer.
Molly,
The trainer did say they would end up inside today. I think with so many deaths from heat stroke the trainers are more aware and careful...I hope.

Lisa,
Thanks for the tip. I believe I read that somewhere, too. I will pick up some today. I was glad my son was working at a nursery this summer, thinking he would get used to the heat, but he wasn't conditioning like he should.
Praying for you ds, also.

Praying for him, Tammy. Are those really normal responses to heat and physical stress?

my ds came home after this am's practice and said about 1/2 of the kids vomited. I am having him eat only an egg or yogurt before he goes in the am and that seems to be working, with a bit of Gatorade. It usually is a combination of kids not being in that great of shape, coupled with the fact that most kids are in AC often during the summer and aren't acclimated to the heat.
Hope things are going better, Tammy....
I got there early today and the boys looked like a military camp or something. I think the discipline and challenge of doing something hard is of value beyond just the "sport" of it, don't you agree??

Christian is struggling too. He asked me last night if it were possible for a kid to have a heart attack. Um...
The coaches have been super cautious--no pads or helmets. Still is 100 degrees at 6 in the evening!

did everyone's boys do better today? We had a storm last night, and while still humid, the temps are back down in the '80's. Joseph thinks he is going to make it!
They did helmets/mouthgaurds this week, no full pads til Sat and next week...I am sure getting used to the hot Helmet and that mouthgaurd gagging you was hard enough for some kids...
