OK- I have been convinced that these would be a good activity for my kids. my dd has a birthday coming up, and Granny has been asking what to buy.
Do you think the starter kit is enough, or would it be better to order the deluxe kit? Every time I buy blocks or similar things, I always wish I had two sets.

Personally, I would go for the deluxe if you have the funds. As with any blocks, in my opinion, the more you have, the more creative you can be.

I've been thinking at these for awhile too. Everyone I've talked to said the bigger set is better....more versatile and more kids can work with them.

We LOVE wedgits! I only have the starter set, and that's great for the 2-year-old, but by the time my oldest was nearly 4, he had mastered all of the cards that came with it. Granted, I'd like to have more, but they are pricey.
Starter set or deluxe, you'll enjoy them either way.

Rainbow Resources has the deluxe set for under $40. They also have a ton of other fun stuff- the Prang water colors, the scented marker set that so many people say is great, Beethoven's Wig cds... it is a dangerous place for me to be browsing...

I'd say get more than the starter. We have the starter set with the cards and the kids have mastered them all. You can really make some pretty cool structures with more.

There's something called Ideal Blox that are exactly like Wedgits, only much cheaper. You can Google it or go to eBay to find sets.
They are a fantastic toy - not only do they increase spatial awareness, building skills, hand/eye coordination, fine motor skills, logic, etc. but they are a favorite of a wide range of ages. Even adults like to build with them (who, me?  )

Thanks for that tip, Lori. I found the Ideal Blox at HobbyTron. There is a demonstration video, and right now they have free shipping. In the video, the blocks sound wooden- is that correct? For some reason I was thinking they are plastic. The set of fifteen was around $13.95 at hobbytron

No, that's definitely a plastic-y click you're hearing - seriously, they're identical to Wedgits except for the name. I'm surprised they're not infringing on a copyright or something =)

Wedgit update: I ordered the deluxe set from Rainbow Resources ($28 for the set of thirty, which is really two basic 15 piece sets).
I have to say... those little things are very ingenious. The kids are really loving them- they are different from leggos and other blocks in a unique way. When my ds plays with them, I can really see the wheels in his head turning. He'll look at one of the pictures in the book, count out the number and color of pieces needed and then try to figure out how to do it. What a great problem solving lesson. Or he'll come up with his own creation- today it was building a "drop box"- a tower as tall as he could make it that would let the little white piece fall all the way to the bottom.
I think they must have great appeal for older kids, too, because it's just so cool how they all fit together, and then it's fun to figure out the designs and build them. Thumbs up here!

We already have the deluxe set but I was wondering if anyone thinks having the green base board would help my 3 yo to use them easier. I can occasionally get him to try them out but I really thought he would love them.
Any advice? We also do not have the cards. Might that help?

I also wonder about the base board. My just turned 3 yo manages with them fairly well on the carpet, but we do have a lot of falling wedgits around here (and they sure can clatter on a wood floor!)

Thumbs up for Wedgits here. We ordered the starter set from Timberdoodle and quickly discovered we needed more. Now we also have the deluxe set. I am wondering, though, if the small white pieces in the deluxe set will be a choking hazard for the baby when she becomes mobile.
Anyway, they are a huge hit with our children!

I think that piece will be okay but try to send it down a toilet paper tube. That is the size you need to stay larger than.

The small white piece would be a huge choking hazard - either take them out of the set or keep it where the baby can't get to it once she's mobile. I don't rely on the toilet paper tube test - any small objects are banned when toddlers are around. Always better safe than sorry.
