Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Those are awesome, but something tells me that you don't need to go to that much trouble to help your child learn letter sounds. Don't feel bad - some people just like to keep busy and have a little too much free time.

I love those pouches! So cute! Do you sew at all? I don't think they'd be hard to put together at all. What a neat thing to have to work on the letter sounds!

I agree, they don't look too hard to make, if you have some basic sewing skills. I can remember my mom making doll clothes, Halloween costumes, etc. that were far more elaborate. Other mothers might choose to go "all out" with different things, like decorating birthday cakes, making fancy garnishes out of vegetables, scrapbooking, or painting murals.   I'm all in favor of these little efforts to make everyday things more beautiful and personal, as long as the process is enjoyable.

Since I'm not up for much sewing at the moment, my temporary solution for the sound pouches involves small blue plastic boxes (from American Science and Surplus, of course ), with the letters printed on mailing labels and stuck on top.   Of course, these are functional, but I'd like to make something more beautiful and creative later on. After all, the more appealing the materials are, the more we'll all be motivated to use them.

ok very cute but how about this...

cut out the felt and hole punch along the sides
let your big kids lace them into pouchs

then let them scavenger hunt things to fill them with

then you can give them to the little kids

stll cute less work for mom...

For those of you with children who already know their sounds and letters, are you still planning to make sound pouches?

My ds already knows them, and my dd already knows most of them, so I'm wondering if I want/need to make up pouches. I want to be complete in my presentations, but if they already know the material, should I put my time and energy into something else? We've been visiting the Starfall phonics website for about two years now, and that is how they have learned the letters and sounds. They both still love to sit in my lap and "do letters" on Starfall. We started it before I knew much about Montessori. Anyway, it has worked, so I'm not sure about making up 26 sound boxes...

No. I'm not making anything like that. Dd knows her letter sounds already and so I will put my energies toward something more productive for her.
But I just thought they were so cute I had to share.

And Maggie, what a fantastic idea about having the kids make them and fill them!

Well I absolutely LOVE those adorable sound pouches, and had I not just cut out 200 felt letters and applied them to my 65 jewelry boxes I would have made those cute little pouches myself, cause I love to sew alot more than I like to cut and paste....but I think if you are already past the sounding out/phonetic stage, I woudn't go to all the trouble. I would move to the Blue and then Green stage and do the double digraphs. Are you taking the online training class, I can't remember Melinda and have you seen Karen's Kits? They are truly well done, as are Lori's Pink, Blue and Green Series. It IS alot of work to put the WHOLE series together, but then I still have two learners to work with them, so for me it was a no brainer

Let us know what you decide!!
Blessings!
