Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'd love to get the input of the group on this.

My just-turned 7yo dd has become an avid reader and writer, and is fascinated with pursuing these interests every chance she gets. (I'm delighted by this, because for a while there, it looked like she was going to have to find a college that offered a tree-climbing scholarship. For me, trees are things to sit under and read.) At the same time as this wonderful reading explosion is occurring, I'm seeing her ability to take in other concepts stall out (for lack of a better term), particularly in math.

In your varied experiences, is that a common thing...the need to master one skill before being able to really embrace the learning of another? I really want to avoid pushing her if she's trying to gain mastery in one area to the temporary exclusion of some others, but I don't want to see her fall too far behind in an area that is such an important foundation element.

I'd welcome your thoughts. Thanks in advance!

Tracy

I think it is fairly common to learn in fits and starts, and one of the reasons behind letting a child choose her own work. She will choose what she needs as long as she needs it and then move on.

Yes! My kids are the same way, fits and starts as Theresa said. It is frustrating sometimes, my 5 year-old is really into math right now and I wish he was that into reading!

Just for the record, I could have started my own tree-climbing university She's very young still and I think this IS part of the Nature/Nurture benefit of a Montessori approach. You can subtly still incorporate the other subject areas while she goes nuts with her reading and writing!! It's very exciting level of discovery for her IMHO.
