Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am looking for an American History book to read aloud to my first graders. I have This Country Of Ours-do you think it is too advanced for first grade? My plan was to read it slowly-over two years, at least-and add lots of other books in as needed.
Thanks!
Jennifer

Me again. I also have A First Book in American History by Edward Eggleston. Can anyone comment on this one?

Hi Jennifer,
I read This Country of Ours out loud to my then 5/6th grader and 3rd grader last year. The first grader was to be listening also, buuuut she didn't really like it. The older ones did, though! But they wanted it read in larger chunks, which I did, so I'm wondering if you do break it down into really small chunks - one to two pages a week - if that wouldn't be better for the younger set. It really depends on your child! I'd say give it a try and if it's not a go now, it will be later!

Also, there is a book called Stories of Great Americans for Little Americans by Edward Eggleston. That's got some really nice short stories of American history, but doesn't start as early as This Country of Ours does. She did enjoy that and we will be using it again this year. You can see it here and I think Emmanuel carries it as well.

Just my 2 cents!
God bless,
Angela

Can't comment on those specific books, but dd and I are doing History Pockets from Evan-Moor and they've been great fun. Last year we completed Native Americans and this year we'll do Life in Plymouth Colony, which for girls especially looks enjoyable. These include historical facts (your spine), reading booklets, arts and crafts, and student ends up making their own picture dictionary. I look for work that takes information out of the textbook, so to speak.

You wouldn't need to, but I do supplement these with read-alouds from the time period. It's a hit here.

Me again, too!
I had to laugh at my recommendation and then you ask about a different title of his. How funny! I don't have that one, but we like the other I mentioned!
God bless,
Angela

Jennifer, you might also try How Our Nation Began by Fr. Harndon, check emmanuelbooks.com. This was recommended for 2nd grade through MODG and then there's American History 1 For Young Catholics by Seton which is perfect for 1st grade. Also through Emmanuel. HTH.
