My dd used to get this, she's now getting Cicada. She doesn't think it's twaddle. She remembers it having good historical articles, interviews, biographies, like musicians, authors, plus fun stuff like silly poetry, etc.   It has other cultures/religions featured, but she hasn't seen any anti-Catholic stuff. She actually loves Cricket more than Cicada. There were a few Halloween stories that she wasn't too happy with but for the most part they didn't pose a problem for her. The language is very clean. (She also says there's quite a jump from Cricket to Cicada in that Cicada tackles more issues, e.g., having to do with morals, etc., in case that matters.) It's great if what you want is a mix of genres in a periodical, but if you're already getting exposure to good literature in books, etc. then Cricket isn't "a must". As you can tell, I haven't kept up -- I used to read the issues aloud to all of them, but when they got bigger and we got into chapter books I left the Cricket to my then-11 yo to enjoy on her own. (She's now 16)
