Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Just a few min. ago, I rescued a tiny baby animal in my backyard from my dog. He wasn't hurting it, but I worried he might accidentally harm it.

So now I'm wondering what sort of creature this is we've got, and what kind of mama is going to come get it. It's about the size of a squirrel, with a long tail. It's grey, with small ears, short hair, and long claws. It's eyes are still closed, so it's a very tiny baby, and I'm hoping it's mama comes for it soon.

Any ideas what this is?

Thanks!

Wondering if you ever found out, or how the baby is doing now? Did mom ever come back? It's uncommon for baby mammals to be out of the nest until they are very self-sufficient, so mama may be dead or injured.

If the tail is bald and pinkish, and the nose is sort of pointed, I'd lean towards possum also.
If the tail is more fluffy and the nose is not pointed it could be a baby squirrel.

Squirrels are fun and easy to raise and then let go (but they can be very active and destructive!)
Possums are OK when very small but get very aggressive as they grow and can bite very hard.

Most states have a Dept of Natural Resources you can call and get names of rehabilitators to take orphans. In many states you have to turn them over to licensed rehabbers; you can't raise them on your own.

Well, I'm pretty sure it was a squirrel. I moved it to an area of our yard that is frequented by squirrels, but that my dog couldn't get to, hoping that the mama would return. DH did NOT want me bringing it into the house, and I wasn't too comfortable with that either. The last time I checked it was gone...but I don't know if it was found by the mama or another animal.
