Hello there. I'm getting our science and geography areas all ready to go and would like to present ds with first set of 3-part cards tomorrow. That is, if I can find a lesson on how to present them! Off the top of my head, this is what I would do: make a stack of the photo/word cards. Lay out the photo cards in random order on (right side) rug and do same with word cards. Have child take top card from stack of photo/word cards and place in top left corner of rug. Child finds photo card to match and then word card, identifying out loud what is being named (i.e. cheetah, etc.). I feel overwhelmed with all the "parts" of the 3-part cards! I'll have to sit down tonight and try this out and see how smoothly it goes --- will check in here a little later to see what you have to say!
Thanks for your help here ladies!

What you have is just about what I do with the first presentation of 3-part cards, only I lay out all the control cards in a row (starting with just a few, say 3-5 and of all familiar objects, so that the lesson is focused on what 3-part cards are about, rather than learning new names). Once they get the hang of it, add in more familiar objects. Later, they can start working with things they might know the name of right off the bat.
The separated cards are spread out in two areas (words in one, pictures in another), so that all can be seen - this way the child can choose the 'easier' ones first to get the concept then move to any harder ones.
(in another thread, I mention that I start with no words and only say words as I need them) I say, "These are matching cards."
I demonstrate by picking up a picture and holding it next to each picture to see if it matches, when I reach the matching one, I set it right on top. "Would you like to try?" (let them try if they want, or do another one and ask again - by the last one, they can definitely put it on the matching picture - but based on the child, it might be better to present the entire thing yourself before asking for their participation - base that on your own children).
Then I do the same thing with the words - making it obvious either by pointing back and forth at the letters I'm looking at or very obviously looking very carefully to find the appropriate match.
After I re-separate the pieces, I invite the child to do it themselves, with or without me right there (based on what they want).
After some practice and some reading skills, they can start matching words to the pictures without having the control cards right there, only pulling them out to check, or using a control chart rather than cards.

I really like the lesson plans for 3 Part Cards at Matri Learning. You can use the Three-Period lesson for this as well! Have fun tomorrow and let us know how it goes!!
Blessings!

Does this mean that you place the picture card right on top of the control card so it lines up or do you mean at the top of the rug? Thanks for your description here. I will be practicing this morning and presenting this afternoon, hopefully!
Meredith, I cannot view PDF's on this computer for some reason --- will have to boot up my computer and view the lesson you linked!
Thanks to both of you for your help!

You are welcome. Is it just your computer Kristin, or is it that the pdf won't open for you?

Yes, I put the picture right on top of the picture and the word right on top of the word. This really seems to drive home the point of matching words and pictures, at least for us.
Let us know how it goes and how you ended up doing it.

Thanks, Catholic Mommy! I will let you know how it goes!!!
Meredith, I believe that it is just my computer. I'm unable to open any PDF on this computer, for example Karen Tyler's album files I cannot open from this computer. I tried reinstalling Adobe Acrobat, but that didn't work. Time to talk to DH about it and see if he knows what the deal is! Thanks for asking!!!
* Meredith, I just printed the lessons you linked to and they are very helpful! I've decided that I've received so much useful information in this thread that I'm going to have to spend tonight reading through and preparing for tomorrow's presentation! I can't wait!!!
