I absolutely adore Spencerian script, and I've always wanted to teach it to my kids. I HATED the palmer style I grew up with, and I consequently changed my handwriting to spencerian when I was a romantic 14 year old. I'm still pleased as punch with my handwriting.
From looking at the website of Michael Sull, it seems this isn't taught until 2nd grade? I am thinking of going with Getty-Dubay italic for it's beauty in comparison to the other choices. has anyone tried this? What would transition well into Spencerian?

We use Getty Dubay Italic here and love it. However, part of its ease and beauty is that you don't have to learn a different style when going from manuscript to cursive. The letters are still formed the same way, just joined. Also, there is an emphasis on NOT making any loops; for example a lower-case "l" in cursive would just be a line down and then join to the next letter. There is no loop. It seems to me that Spencerian writing (which I do agree is beautiful)'s whole focus IS the lovely loops, so I don't know if GB would be the best basis for it.
Like you, I learned the Palmer script as a child. I never had good handwriting and resorted to printing most of the time until I started using GB with my then-6th grade ds coming out of public school (where they really don't bother teaching handwriting anymore, as everyone types now!). I did all the exercises along with him in the GB books and have developed a much nicer script and don't mind writing now.

I guess I mainly like the Spencerian for the art of it more than just the practicality. I remember my father showing me a letter which was written by his grandfather in 1917ish. It was exquisite! It reminded me of the Declaration of Independence but legible!
Yes, legibility is primary. :) I do like Getty Dubay for that reason. Just wondered if anyone else had dabbled in Spencerian...

You can get Spencerian books here -- they're quite inexpensive. I got ours through Cathswap, if I remember correctly. My children have not been interested in using the copybooks themselves, but they have at various times been interested in calligraphy, so I keep the books around just in case one of them eventually wants to learn it.

Molly- I just practiced copying the alphabet. My handwriting is not exact in terms if the proportions given in the book. In fact, I got my G from the packaging from a bar of Crabtree and Evelyn Gardenia soap. But it looks pretty good, and I often get compliments on my handwriting. One reason I did it in the first place is that I was playing around with my signature as all good 14 year old girls do when they should be taking notes in class, and I despised the Palmer P which I'd been taught to write my name with. I remembered that letter written by my grandfather, and that was how I found out about Spencerian.
Yeah I wish could take my kids to a workshop too. They do come to homeschool conferences apparently.
Thank you Stef! This looks awesome!

I bought the Mott Media ones (mentioned above) for DS (he is 3rd grade). He chose it for himself (my way of ensuring compliance) and we LOVE it
ETA: We used the Penny Gardner Italics book first, once he was confident and requesting to learn 'fancy writing' we switched. He is working his way through the first book.

My almost 8yo seems to think it very simple... but then again he really took to it like a duck to water. I think the calligraphic nature of it really appealed to him (that and the fact that the founding fathers had writing like it )
ETA: Oh, and I don't really find it hard to teach at all... they diagram each of the strokes used at the top of the page (in the Mott Media Books) and there is also an instruction manual to go with it.

Do you use a special pen? How long did it take to go through all the books? All handwriting books have examples to copy from (several grade levels of handwriting), since Specerian is finished after the initial books did your kids have any problems continuinig with copywork on their own?

No, we just use a pencil... they recommend pencils, graduating to a technical pencil once they don't press so hard, then to the special pen at about the age of 12.
James is still working through the books, but he is already doing copywork using it and loving.

Another question! Does your son copy directly from script/cursive in Spencerian handwriting???? I thought *I* would have to write it out in SH and *then* the kids would copy that.

I ordered these from B&N, they are very inexpensive and you pay no shipping and I can look at them before I purchase them. Just in case anyone else is looking for a cheap way of buying this script!

Right now, he is copying the book. He pretty much figured it all out for himself when copying something else (not school related, just his own rabbit trail), but I also discovered that the Kunstler Script font looks VERY like it... enough to copy anyway
I think it comes with Office 2003.

Thank you all for your responses! I ordered Educational fonts for descriptive fonts only. I want to use the beautiful script for handwriting and copying. I showed my kids the different fonts and they all independently picked the same one! I am excited little ones from the above posts have taken to it so well. We are all looking forward to starting!
