Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I found some sundresses in washable rayon, cute prints, at Goodwill yesterday and the idea came to me to cut off the top and make elastic waist skirts from them.

Ideally, the dress will have no darts and no back zipper so it's just a tube, so to speak. Hold it up to you with the hemline where you would want yours to be, and stretch out the fabric to see if it fits over the hips.

Also would work with cotton knit sundresses, especially in one size larger than your normal size.

Maybe really talented people could transform a rayon sundress into a skirt with a zipper?

Just an idea.

I think this would be fairly easy to do. I had a very long tiered skirt (you know... very flowy and twirly!) that was disfigured by a splash of bleach. (Bright white spots on a cinnamon colored skirt!) It was a cheap skirt, but so soft that I couldn't bear to think of putting it in the rag box. The spots were at the top of the skirt just under the waist which had been a drawstring with a little elastic. I cut off the top two tiers and turned it into a very nice tea length skirt. I had to secure my elastic with some stitching on the side seams because I made the pocket too big. The elastic was twisting and turning in the extra space.

I hope someone will post pictures if they try to convert a dress into a skirt!

Ha! How funny! I just did something similar this week. I had access to a sewing machine for the first time in a long time and have been repairing and making tons of stuff before I have to give it back.

The skirt was a cotton kid's sundress that I loved the stripes on (I'm such a sucker for stripes and polka dots!) but the top was very unflattering so I whacked it off and made the simplest hem around the waist. The super cool part was the back had been gathered up almost smocking-like so when I cut it off I ended up with a gathered back and smooth front.

Very easy to do and I highly recommend you trying. Afterall, what would you be out if it doesn't work? The outfit was probably gathering dust in the closet anyway, right? Try and revitalize it and bring it out into the daylight!

I have done this before and it DOES WORK! Like Matilda, I've found some GREAT fabrics and just couldn't pass it up for $2!!!! Or, had a dress that didn't fit right anymore, but loved the material.

Thanks for the reminder, Kelly. I had forgotten about this little "trick".
