I am trying to find some good quality paintbrushes for watercolor and tempera. My older kids have some good quality watercolor ones from their art studio last year. But I do not know what to get for the preschooler - I have tried so many lower quality ones - but the bristles just come out when he is painting.

We have used Crayola watercolors in the past. I just bought 2 PRANG watercolors from Michael's and all my kids, including the 3.5 year old, said that the brush in the Prang was MUCH better than the crayola brushes. I have to agree. They love using the Prang brushes and paints much better. they have asked for them 4 times in the past week, which is unusual.
I inherited several professional watercolor brushes from people.....my kids really like the LONG ones. FWIW. Not sure why. I would think they'd want shorter ones.
Did you see the brushes at Paper, Scissors, Stone? May be worth calling them and asking their opinion.
Dandelion Summer has a Watercolor Set....look at the brush they are using in that set. I'd like to know how big it is.

Suzanne - I am not sure exactly what I want - I just dislike the brushes I have where the hair comes out on the paintings 
I am looking at the Lakeshore Learning brushes which coordinate with pots for tempera. For watercolors I am not sure yet.

Marilyn those are the ones I was going to recommend. We have used this plastic handle/nylon bristle Lakeshore set for preschool tempera painting and found them to be durable. You need something pretty big and durable for tempera painting. It might be bigger than you want for watercolors but could be workable. I've also seem a set of smaller brushes at Michael's that I have considered for watercolor. They are smaller and have a clear acrylic handle. I believe those also have the nylon bristles.

We have those Tempura brushes from Lakeshore.....the nylon brush ones (LC1340X), all plastic ones. and LOVE them. They are only a year old, but they look brand new and have been used quite a bit. I'm imagining they'll last a long time, so were worth the $$$$
We also have the no-spill paint cups with their washable tempura paints. They are GREAT! I know I would hardly ever do Tempura painting if it weren't for this set up.

I checked today and these Loew Cornell brushes are the one's I was thinking of. I think they look pretty good for the preschool crowd. Better quality than the cheapo ones but still very reasonalble for a child's brush set.

The Prang Brush that comes with the Prang Watercolors is Prang #9. It's a good brush for them. But maybe you want something even bigger for the preschoolers. The Loew brushes look similar to the sets I've seen at Michaels and I've just used the larger ones for the preschoolers.
I tried the BIG Lakeshore tempura brushes with watercolors the other day, and it didn't work. The color just slides off of it and you get an "airy" streak on the paper.

And I saw today that you can buy Prang brushes separate from the watercolor sets at Hobby Lobby.

Thanks Mary and Suzanne for the tips on brushes. I will do the ones from Lakeshore for tempera - and probably some from Michaels for watercolor. Orders are still pending....I will do them by this weekend...
