Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am making an attempt to come up with an outline of a curriculum of sorts for my son ( he will be 5.5 in Sept) for the school year.I am hoping that putting it down on paper will help me "see" whether I am trying to do too much or setting unrealistic goals for all of us.

He reads fluently and with comprehension (almost above 2nd grade level). So now that hes well on the way in that area, I thought I would try some spelling and vocabulary building activities for him. Does anyone have any good books or outlines to recommend for teaching spelling. Is there an order to start and build up on. He can do the phonetic words (cvc and silent e words) but how to build up form there? Do they just have to memorize them?

Also, what do you do for handwriting for a child of this age? Any suggestions?

Thanks
Bev

Bev, I know many on this Board use the Spellers from CHC (Catholic Heritage Curricula) You might search theLiving Language Arts Forum with the topic Spelling and I'm certain you will find many ideas there. If you're looking to continue with a mostly Montessori style Language Arts method, have you had him work out spelling with the Moveable Alphabet? And has he mastered all the different levels of the Metal Insets for hanwriting preparation? Also, I know the Grammar lessons for the 6-9 range are a continuation of word building and then transition into parts of speech and use of words.

For Handwriting programs, we've used Hanwriting Without Tears, Writing Can Help, and LOTS and LOTS of copywork!

HTH, somewhat, I know you'll get more great ideas here!
Blessings!

Hi Bev

We've only been h/schooling for about six months, and prior to that my dd was at a Monty preschool. She's a very good reader too, however we are only just getting started with some writing.

She started working on phonograms last year (multiple letter sounds) and so I'm continuing with these. I use a couple of resources, including LEM Phonics and something I've found on the net called Word Mastery (similar to Writing Road to Reading) as our basis. They are all phonics based reading programs.

When we do a new sound, I ask her to trace the letters into her exercise book using plastic stencils (she used a wooden movable alphabet for this at preschool), and then she writes several words with the new sound in red and rest of the word in blue. She also 'writes' these with the movable alphabet (cards) that I've made. Sometimes we also be some copywork with that new sound.

I thinks this is helping with both reading and spelling.

All the exercises with the movable alphabet are helping spelling because they are making (coding) the words (as opposed to reading, which is decoding).

Pink, blue and green cards would also be helpful here I think, although I have not made many at home.

See Lori's site (www.montessoriforeveryone.com) for an excellent overview of language activities and her shop for cards etc.

Hope this is helpful
