My sister called in tears, as she has developed another large painful cyst on her ovary. This is happening almost every cycle. This isn't polycystic, it's one per month.
There's not much medical recourse for these kind of functional cysts, except BC pills to stop the cycles. So, does anyone have recommendations for nutrition, supplements, homeopathic that might help her stop making large cysts?

I know someone who doesn't officially have PCOS either but she is currently reading a book and taking various supplements, changing her diet, etc., to deal with these kinds of problems. She got her info at this site
www.ovarian-cysts-pcos.com. She doesn't want to do BC either.
She said the book she ordered has a lot of good info. The website also has a lot to offer concerning recommended supplements, etc. HTH!

Have you ever read Marilyn Shannon's book: Fertility Cycles and Nutrition? This might be a good place to start if you have never read it.
Here is the link at Amazon.com: & nbsp; & nbsp; http://www.amazon.c om/Fertility-Cycles-Nutrition-Marilyn-Shannon/dp/0926412094
I will keep your sister in my prayers. Peace.

Jen,
I don't know if this will help, but I used to get them and my husbands aunt said she used to get them too. When I asked her how did she stop getting them she mentioned that she had another baby . Mine stopped when I got pregnant with my second child. I don't think if you get them you are doomed to always have them. Perhaps a way to disrupt the cycle either through pregnancy or with pills will do it. Or perhaps it is a hormonal level thing.
Just some thoughts.

if it's not PCOS (which is very different and has different causes) it's most likely follicular cysts, which form right after ovulation - the follicle is supposed to rupture but doesn't, and hangs around a few days. I used to have them as a 20-something. At the time I was not following church teaching and I was prescribed BC pills, which definitely got rid of the cysts (they are extrememly painful). Later after I got married and started trying to conceive, it only came back once, after several pregnancies.
Since it's tied to ovulation, possibly she could chart her cycles and anticipate ovulation, and start taking something strong like ibuprofen on a regular basis for a few days before and after.
Also, I'm not positive on this, but I think if there is a medical reason to take BC pills you can get permission for it, as long as you were using NFP or complete abstinence, to be sure no child is actually conceived (since BC pills can work as post-conception also). Maybe just a few mos on them would stop the cysts from forming. If she has a good Catholic OB-GYN they would be more willing to work with her on alternative strategies.
hth,

Thanks for all the advice. Truly, there isn't much information about follicular or functional cysts except to try the BC pills to help stop it. She is going to a good Catholic OB. They suspect that she isn't ovulating completely. And although they want to have another baby, the large cysts are complicating the matter. They don't seem to fade after few days, but remain painful and present for more than a month.
It's not PCOS, and there are a few other options they are going to try before BC pills.
