Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am looking for either a book, a guide, a workbook or a curriculum to help my son with writing. When he is asked to write about something he is interested in, he will do a decent job. When it is not a topic of interest, it is like pulling teeth. I know my own limitations and don't think myself capable to "make my own". I am not a good creative writer and often have a hard time coming up with ideas.

I was looking at CHC's Creative Communications. Does anyone have any experience with it? Would you recommend something else? We have grammar covered, I just want to get him more comfortable with writing.

Thanks in advance!

This book is not bad. I believe Cathy Duffy lists it as a Top Pick, fwiw. It offers a variety of writing topics and approaches, and has pretty much something for everyone. I am not sure how old your ds is, but you could also try Intermediate Language Lessons or Lingua Mater for writing assignments. While both books do offer some grammar, neither is really "heavy" on the grammar side, they are largely geared toward narration and writing. You could use them either alongside Creative Communications or in place of. I know that CHC usually recommends using CC one day a week in conjunction with your other Lang. Arts materials. One more book I can recommend is Wordsmith (again, not sure how old your ds is). It is for grades 7-9, and is excellent and affordable. You can use it over one school year or stretch it out over two.

I hope this helps!

I changed the title on this thread to hopefully catch the eye of anyone who has used CHC'c book Creative Communications. Is there anybody who can tell me how they liked this book? Is suitable for a child who is about 4th grade level when it comes to writing?

I have been reading some of the older Bravewriter threads. Any thoughts on how this one compares?

Matilda,

Yes, you can use this book with a 4th grade - it is intended for the pre-writing stage (pre-K/K) all the way through high school. It offers a wide variety of projects for each of these levels, so that you can just leaf through it and pick what you want. I would not say it is a "complete" writing instruction program (like IEW or something like that), but it sounds as if your ds already has many of the basics down. Also, the author, Sandra Garant, has a website (I thinkk there is a link at the CHC site, or you could Google her name), and she also offers online courses which look really good and are affordable.
