Ack! My ds is rapidly outpacing me... he has taken to the hundreds board I made (cardstock, laminated) and carries it around with him. He asked me twice yesterday if I knew that 100 was not the highest number. He is asking me things like: did you know 2 plus 2 is 4, etc.
I have several math items coming any day ( blue and red rods, numbers with counters, spindle box - a real one, LOL). However, I feel like I need to get geared up for even more. I was so hoping we'd get to math in Karen's class before I felt like I needed to make or buy more materials, but I feel like I need to work with his current high level of interest.
What should I get? Intro to the decimal system? A hundreds chain? (he is counting to a hundred on his chart). I don't want to make a lot of willy nilly purchases, but I want to be prepared.
Funny- people ask me all the time if homeschooling is hard. Well, yes it is. It is hard for this old lady to keep up! But I'm fascinated, too, how little I have to do- just plant a few seeds and his mind seems to gallop away with it all.

This is GREAT Melinda! I love it, your ds sounds like a little gem
He will love the blue/red rods and my middle guys just "oohed and aahed" over the spindle box! I really like the 100 & 1000 chain and it's relatively inexpensive (Montessori Concepts). You can print and laminate the counting arrows from JMJ Publishing (aka Liveable Learning) and he should be pretty busy with that for a while! Don't panic, just go with it! You could also give him little challenges to go around the house and bring you __ number of something(s)!
Blessings!

Melinda,
I think Meredith has offered some great suggestions. I don't think you would be purchasing vainly if you went ahead and got the hundred and thousand chain, or the intro to decimals tray. You might also consider the addition board. Especially since he's starting to add. But these are only suggestions. I think the blue/red rods will delight him for some time. And my kids adore the spindle box! I think once your materials come in, it'll take some of the heat off of you, but you might as well resign yourself to the fact that you're going to be ordering again at some point this year. You've got a bright one! Lots of hugs to you! Sometimes they are so hard to keep up with! Did someone forget to tell my son that we are taking the summer off??

I was thinking the tens and teen boards, intro to the decimal system and the snake game. In addition to the above great suggestions! It is hard to keep up isn't it!

How awesome for you and your son, Melinda! I'm not completely versed in the math works yet but I'm wondering about the table-top rods???
Good luck and keep us posted with what you do! I, for one, would love to know because I have the feeling DS is going to do the same thing to me any day now!

Thank you all. And I don't mean to make him sound like some little Einstein- he is all boy and drives me bananas half the time. I had to delay shipping on my order since I was out of town, but now I am really hoping it will come any time. I think I will feel better once I get him started with something new like the rods. I will go ahead and order the chains, though, and the intro to decimals- maybe the strip board and snake game as well.
It is just so amazing to me that he is learning so much so quickly right now. I guess he is going through a phase (simultaneously with the licking everything he sees phase, the climbing up the stairs on the *outside* of the staircase phase and the running around wearing nothing but underwear -on his head- phase). 100% boy.

Too funny!!! I'm glad my 5-year-old isn't the only boy that does the underwear on the head thing!

I keep wondering if/when he'll outgrow that. He's 4.5, and your ds is still doing it at five... hmm... I wonder if our dhs also secretly run around at night with underwear on their heads....

I thought I was the only one...and it's ok if he IS a little Einstein, we're all biased here
Have fun!
