Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My ds is 7 and would be in 2nd grade this fall. His reading level is at the short chapter book level. He reads some Magic Tree House, and books like Dolphin Adventure. He does not like to write if he cannot spell every word right. I've started a journal with him this summer for us to write back and forth to each other. I can read what he writes and I think the misspellings are common for his age. Last year we used CHC speller (not regularly) but am wondering if the AVKO program would be better for him? Would it be too much? He's a bit of a perfectionist and his immediate response when he has to write anything is, "I don't know how to spell it" before he'll even try. Am I expecting too much? Thanks for any suggestions! Courtney

We have used the CHC spellers in the past and did a little bit with The Writing Road to Reading (as per MODG). I am seriously considering using AVKO for my 11yo ds as he isn't that great of a speller.

I think one thing that is appealing about AVKO is the immediate correction while giving the initial spelling 'test'. You give the word, the child writes it to the best of his ability, then you give the correct spelling and the child corrects his mistake if he made one.

It looks like the program starts out very easily that I think your son would soon get used to the idea of just trying to spell. Emphasize that he isn't being graded and that he will make his own corrections. Harder words are introduced, but they build upon the foundations of the easy words so that it makes sense and the child is actually thinking about how things are spelled. At least it seems that way to me.

I know Elizabeth Foss has written about AVKO, either here or on her blog (or both), as that's how I first came to know about the program. You might want to do a search to see what she has to say.

HTH,
Valerie

Thanks, Valerie. I think both my dc could benefit from the AVKO program.

Could I "flaunt my ignorance" and ask what AVKO is? I've been puzzling over it for some time now...

Hi, Ouiz. Here is the link for avko. AVKO stands for auditory, visual, kinesthetic, oral multisensory approach. It's the name of a company that makes a program called Sequential Spelling.
