Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I would love to put some art pictures on my (eventual!) blog - does anyone know what the good practice/rules/laws are about cutting and pasting or linking images?

For example in the blog header - if I wanted to put a Cassatt picture - would this be infringing any laws?

For those of you that have pictures (not photos) - where do you get them from?

Thank you.

Unless the website you get the image from specifically states that the image is copyrighted, I usually assume it's fair game.

Just make sure to download it onto your own computer first. If you need a URL link, open up an account with photobucket.com or another online album as such.

Writings and works of art including photographs are copyrighted by default. This includes amateurs' work which is freely available for viewing (such as material posted on Web sites and blogs.)

But aside from fair use (which seems to be a very misunderstood concept not permitting nearly as much as many people think it does,) there are rules allowing copying without permission after a certain length of time has passed since the works were produced or published or a certain length of time after the death of the creator of the work, so not knowing too much about Mary Cassatt, I can't say for sure whether the image you chose would be able to be used without permission from a copyright holder.

Here are a couple of good copyright information resources:

Hope this helps,
Theresa
