Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have and love Children of the Forest. I would love to add many more Elsa Beskow books to our collection, any favorites out there? I can't seem to find any in the stores to pre-read. Also does anyone know why these books are popping up on pagan lists on Amazon? I found several references to God in All Around the Year. Is there something I'm missing?

OHHHHH, we LOVE Elsa Beskow around here. Maggie gets them for big celebrations ... we've got and REALLY enjoyed ... Around the Year, Pelle's New Suit (definitely a classic about Pelle wanting a new suit and how he goes about getting it!), Aunt Green, Aunt Brown and Aunt Lavender, Peter and Lotta's Adventure, Aunt Brown's Birthday, and Peter and Lotta's Christmas which is a WONDERFUL Christmas story. The last four are about the same family.

I'm not sure why she's on pagan lists -- maybe her elf/gnome books that are very nature inspired are also liked by the pagans. I know that I first heard about them on a Waldorf list (and they can be a bit new-agey sometimes)....

But I can certainly vouch for the ones I've mentioned, and Maggie also has Children of the Forest which she loves too!

Jennifer, we love Elsa Beskow, too - so wholesome and sweet! We especially love Woody, Hazel and Little Pip and Christopher's Harvest Time.

I first heard about them on a Waldorf list I was on. Nature stories are big in Waldorf education; in fact, if I'm remembering correctly, the second grade curriculum centers around nature stories.

That's just perfect Dawn - I think these are stories my second grader and my almost three year old would both enjoy.   I was hoping to add several more to our library this fall. Thank you everyone for your suggestions.

I didn't mean to cause any alarm. I haven't found anything questionable in her books either - but my radar for that kind of thing isn't very good. I'm always terrified that I will recommend a book and have someone tell me that the book is very obviously about devil worship or child abuse or polygamy or something.

Yes, it's Waldorf that can be a bit new-agey (but then the new agers have taken over Montessori a bit too so there you go!).

I LOVE Beskow's books -- her drawings are beautiful and the stories are lovely. The only problem my kids had with "Peter and Lotta's Adventure" was that the children swim "naked" -- by 8 yob thought this was DISGUSTING ! Hope he keeps that attitude for a LONG time

We love that book too! The little boy is called"Hänschen" in the german version.
I am curious, in the German he wants to gather berries for his mother for a Name Day gift. Is it the same in English?

And Mary, there were more than a few giggles about the naked swimming in All Around the Year at our house.
