Hello everyone!

I have 2 daughters, 4 and 7, and I'm really keen on the idea of using nomenclature cards in the various areas of our studies together...that is, as soon as I figure out exactly what they are and how they differ from 3-part cards!

I've looked at lots of catalogs and web sites offering both, and it seems that the 3-part cards are the basic ones that simply have the control card and then the same thing, only separated, to be matched up by the child, right? The ones called nomenclature cards, where it seems that a definition is included and sometimes a master control card...are these the ones aimed more for the 6-9 crowd?

Can you set me straight? I'd also welcome any input on additional ideas for how to use them.

Thanks for being there!

Everything you've mentioned falls under "nomenclature cards" - it's just that there are two kinds.

3-6 nomenclature cards: one picture, one label, one card of picture/label together

6-9 nomenclature cards: one picture, one label, one definition

The nomenclature cards I sell usually come with definitions, so that they can be used for both 3-6 and 6-9. For 3-6, you'd print two copies of the pictures/labels and cut one apart. For elementary, you'd print one set of the picture/labels and cut them apart, then print one set of definitions.

Hope that helps!

I should have added that they're really a great way to learn - for any age, they help kids practice reading skills, matching skills, left to right (since that's the order they're placed in on the rug), and sequencing.

For 3-6, suggest that the child trace one of the pictures once they're done with the work. For beginning readers, have them copy one of the definitions on a piece of paper. For older kids, have them write up their own "fact" about the work. I like materials that can be used with lots of ages!

This is what I had been wondering lately too (good question earthmaven!).

I have something to sort of expand on it...

How do you store/display the cards? Basically, what would be the cheapest but yet most pleasing way to set them up?

The most I have come up with is just some sort of storage box...but I didn't know if I was missing some other special find!

Thanks!

I found this box that was intended to help scrapbookers organize pictures and negatives at Costco. It holds a lot of nomenclature cards in separate little files until I'm ready to set them out. Did I mention I have a lot of nomenclature cards?

I like napkin holders to set the cards out on a tray!

Ah HA! Napkin holders...that's the ticket.

And I have one of those photo storage boxes too...I have "card" on the brain, so I'm looking at address card holders, index card holders...

It's so nice to come here and have someone help you look outside of the box!

Thanks, everyone. Now I know exactly what these are, how to use them, and some great ways to keep them organized. Lucky me, I have a husband who's a web designer, so he's making all my nomenclature cards for me. They're going to look amazing and I can use my "saved" money for other materials!

Hi Meredith,

I'll be happy to show everyone what we've done--it's our summer project together. I'm really fired up about this, and it's a great way for my husband to be involved in what we're doing!

I was just curious how you ladies use nomenclature cards. I made a few of the preschool animal ones and ds isn't interested in them. He's 4 and a half. Is there a "sensitive period" for these cards? Or have I missed something in its presentation and "point of interst"? He does like the concrete exercises prior to the cards and seems to pick up information haphazardly through read-alouds.

Is it possible that he just prefers the tangible item right now?? I wouldn't push it and maybe try again in a few months. Another option is to try and have him match objects to the single cards and forget the description portion to start.

Anyone else??

Genevieve - I agree with Meredith here. My 6yo will not match a definition to a nomen.card, but he does enjoy matching the cards together (print two of each card) or the tangible item (shell, color object, insect, tool) to the card very much!! He's a tactile little guy, and I find that he is very willing to focus his attention, but only if I provide the right avenue for that focus! Otherwise, for him, it's just busywork!

You might check to see if you can find some of those TOOB animals at a good price, or if you're desperate, Michael's carries a really lovely selection of Schleich animals (a smidge pricey.) You could find the animals represented on your cards, and give it a go with the animals in hand. HTH.

I like to use the smaller size Akro bins as holders for the 3-part nomenclature cards. That way, you can put a label in the front slot with the name of the work.

Sister Mary used these and got me into them - not only does it make straightening and arranging work easy, but the child can easily write the name of the work when recording it on their paper. Also if you can find colored bins, you can color-code them to the right section of the classroom.

I always added objects to the vertebrate/invertebrate nomenclature cards - tiny horse, starfish, etc. It made the work more fun.

Here's a post with a picture of a bin with cards, and a shoe cubby from Target that perfectly holds the bins (you can click on that pic to enlarge it):

Lori, thanks for the pics. It's nice to have a birdseye view into the pro's learning rooms

I LOVE the shoe organizer idea and the bins, thanks for sharing it for us here!

Wow! That is such a nice visual! I need to go see what kind of room I have in my Montessori closet to see if I can fit this in. What a great way to organize the cards with the corresponding materials! Thanks - glad you check in on us! I really appreciate the help!

Thanks for the idea, I never would have thought of it without you.
