I'm wondering for any of you who may be following the WTM for Science and History, I have a 4th grader this year and we're toying with Physics. Have any of you followed this and used the text she recommends: Physics Experiments for Children by Muriel Mandell?? I combine my older two for History and we'll be doing Medieval to Early Renaissance, but I want to keep my ds on his grade level for Science. Thanks for any help or reviews here, it is much appreciated!!

I don't have any info on WTM science. I do like Noeo Science. I have not tried their physics program though.

Meredith, I don't know anything about the book you asked about. I loosely follow the science cycle of WTM but I don't use her recommendations.
We will be doing Physics next year. I have been searching already. I have been thinking about Real Science 4 Kids (I'm sorry I don't know the link) It is a textbook of sorts but it has lots of experiments. The level is for Gr.4--6. There is a thread on it on the science forum. I have heard mixed thoughts about it.

Meredith, I used their science cycle for two years but did not use that particular book. We used Adventures with Atoms and Molecules which they recommended.

We did physics this spring for our Adventures in Science club and used Archimedes the Door to Science as our spine tied to a study of simple machines. We used a lot of the video resources at United Streaming.com to supplement. In Georgia homeschoolers can use this resource for free. You might check if it is available in your state. If you are interested I will try to put something together to show you what we did. Best of luck!

We used The New The Way Things Work as our spine. There is some pretty cool software. We read and drew and wrote narrations. It was very memorable and meaningful.

Erin, this is what my ds (almost 9) will do for science this year. I already have The New Way Things Works and it's a really cool book!! He will put together a Physics Science Notebook with illustrations, narrations, and results from experiments. He did a super fun Space and Planets NB this was last year and it turned out great!! Have fun!

We used Noeo physics this past year. I really enjoy TWTM, but I needed something slightly more organized for science, or it just doesn't get done.
I like that Noeo has the experiment kits, but you do need to check for the "common household items" to make sure you are stocked.
The boys enjoyed it, and I think they learned a lot.
We threw in science videos from the library and one on Einstein (this was ours, part of a set...including Curie and ? I am drawing a blank, which I will just attribute to a very late night last night  .)
You can still follow the approach laid out in TWTM with this science program, ie. the narration, paragraphs, summaries. They (NOEO) have nice pages in the book you can copy for narration and illustration, too.
I am trying to decide which program we want to do next.

That was one of the things that attracted me was that I already owned both books  I'm intrigued that your 9 yr old did it, TWTM has it for 8th grade. Mind you I'm getting my 6th and 8th to do it together.

We also have this book and my 7 yo has loved it since he was a wee one. This sounds really neat what you did. I will have a 12yo, 10yo, and 7yo , as well as a 4yo this year and we would love to use this book. We have often just read it here and there in the past, and I have found it quite technical and difficult at times. Did you follow some sort of home made plan when you used it? Like one section at a time including literature as well? Did you do labs to go with it?
Hope I am not hijacking this thread , if so I can move it.

We have used the Mandrell book - I picked up a copy, secondhand, many years ago. We haven't used TWTM schedule, though, for either history or science.
What do we like about Mandrell's book? It is easy to use, clear explanations, very hands on.
